What do you know about them. I am thinking going this route instead of a neon r/t. I am guessing post 94 since they got a bigger engine then. Should handle well and is rr. How do they hold up? Aftermarket parts? Please post any sights for info and parts you might know of..thanks

Miata? Rear-engine? Um....no?
Anyway, Miata.net is probably the best place to go. There's a HUGE aftermarket for these cars. Superchargers, turbochargers, endless suspension parts, and more.

I autocross with a guy who drives a newer one. Swears buy them. He LOVES them. MK4 was not joking, they handle like on rails.
Also there is a place in Texas that for 5grand will drop a small block 305 in it =P haha.
They aren't very fast stock, but handle awesome. Can also be pretty quick.
best selling because it was cheap
not to say its bad
but any other sports car that came close would have been around 28k in recent years
id guess its a good car

Ya, it's called the Monster Miata, it's a couple of em down herr, that NO ONE will mess with. It was one guy that fit a 5.0 in it, but he kinda ran into a pole going about 120, let's just say that car no longer exist.
Experience is something you get after you need it.

I am not totally focussed on power and want a car that will handle good. that is why I am looking at them. I think the thing I am worried about the most is getting killed by SUVs and large trucks. ANyone know how much hard tops run for them?

The car is the best selling because of its price tag but it was not for lack of engineering. The car was engineered to be one of the best. I have read a book you may want to look into about Miata's and there 15 year history. Its called Mazda Miata Performance Handbook. The car in my opinion is one of the best built cars ever. The handling is unbelievable and with a few thousand in upgrades you can have a 12 second car. Check www.flyinmiata.com turbos and superchargers for a super reliable car. These cars are known to run boost for 100,000 mile and more. I am 6' 2" and that is the only downside to these cars. If you are tall its hard to enjoy it with the top up. You feel like a sardine.

Depends on your definition of stuff?
Golf Clubs, Back Pack, Books, Groceries... Yes
Anything bigger than that your out of luck, you can get the little things done in this car but I dont think its meant for that. This car has a 50/50 weight distribution and weighs very little making it agile like a go cart. All i can do is recommend you go test drive one. I did and fell in love with it... then i put the top up, didnt buy it!
How are they in crashes. I live in cal where just about everyone drives an suv. also what keeps you from getting killed if you flip? I was thinking I would but and install all the possible braces and also a roll bar, but still kinda worried. How are they for normal comuters as this will be its primary function.
