Question about Skylines
Friday, May 13, 2005 6:52 PM
Hey there folks!

After 2 big disappointments with the GTO and not getting the job upgrade (and pay upgrade to match ), I've been thinking pretty hard and yes I'm fine... But I was kicking around the idea of buying and importing a Skyline (that's 15+ yrs. old.. importation ban limits).

I'm Just wondering if anyone can fill me in on the details regarding Model and trim designations.

I know that ~1990 Skylines R32's have AWD and RB26DETT engines, HiCAS and all that jazz, I was wondering if some kind soul would post a link with the model/trim breakdown for the Skyline? I've seen some odd designations on eBay (other importers, not the people I'm thinking of using) and I want to chase WTF they mean.

It's all academic for now, I've got my house to pay for, and other things, so I'm just bench racing for now

Thanks folks!

Well for one he's from Cannada so it wont cost near as much as it would for someone in the U.S. to import. Because its like 100x easier. If you actually read what he wrote he said an older one. I have a friend stationed in Japan and he said that R32 skylines around the early 90's only go for 3-4k U.S. dollars.

So like Bortsy said. Just dont say anything. You're stupid.

i dont know much about them but i know that the gts comes with the rb20 rwd...good for about 14.5 or so from what i've heard- theres a couple locals up here that have run anywhere from 16.1 to 14.9 with them. a gtr isd the rb26 awd. you probably knew all that stuff already, but i thought i'd mention it. i like your choice though...i've gotten more into the skylines lately.

hmm
well if gm gets the rwd platform up like they are supposed to, you might be able to get a gto sometime in the next few years

Re: Question about Skylines

Well, right now, I can't get an R33 because it's too new, Canada has a 15 year importation ban on foreign vehicles (that includes some US cars, like the GTO I was coveting), but a 1990 Skyline R32 is no longer under that import ban, and while you can't QUITE get on for $2-3K USD, it's feasible for the US to get them under $10K, and Canada is about $15K.

All you really need to do is provide a certificate of recall completion from the country of origin, an emissions check, Mechanical inspection, etc. Transport Canada is pretty relaxed about importing because they figure that there are so few on the road to begin with. All they care about is that you pay the Duties and taxes due... and do the paper work.

Importing other vehicles isn't really a pain, but you can't license them for highway use.

I'm just curious because I see M-type, GTS, R32... I want to know the difference between them before I slap down some cash and get that sucker into Vancouver.

I know the R32 has the RB26DETT engine, which is very good, but it's a PITA to get emissions cleared every 2 years because from what I've read and heard from people that swap the engine into their 240sx's, they need a fairly restrictive cat. conv. in order to be street legal.

I'm okay by that, but I want to know a bit more about the other models first. If worse comes to worst, I can take the 15K and dump it into a 240 conversion... at least I won't need the HICAS bypass valve then.

TIA!

I can get the R32's imported for around $18k total... From what I've seen, they're a damn-sight better than some of the offerings we get here.

Alright, first off the R32, R33, R34, etc. are the generation, currently the Skyline is on R35, which we all know as the Infiniti G35.

Now the other designations are gts, gts-t, gts-t 2.5, gts-m, GT-R, GT-R Vspec, GT-R Vspec II, and a couple of others I can't think of off hte top of my head. Only the GT-Rs had AWD, Super HICAS, and the RB26DETT, the other models had smaller versions of the RB family of engines, from 2.0L to 2.5L turbo and naturally aspirated. The skyline was available in 2-door and 4-door for as back as R31, could even be before that, but that's the oldest I've personally seen with my own eyes, and RWD. That's the extent of my knowledge, I almost bought one when I was in Okinawa, where you can find them for $1,500 from Americans Rotating off the island, but didn't and all of the information is from personal experience.

R32 is the chassis code for that perticular year of skyline. The later years there were R33 and R34

Currently in canada all you're going to see is something thats 1990 or older. which means for skylines, it will be a R32.

Skyline GTS typeM is usualy a 4door skyline, with a N/A engine (rb20)

Skyline GTS-T is a 2door single turbo car. (RB20DET) good for around 190 horses.

Skyline GT-R is a 2door Twin Turbo (RB26DETT) good for around 300 horses

Check out www.importconcern.ca Its a Alberta importing company, but It has answerd all my questions on importing JDM vehicles.

-And just to throw in my own two cents, I would definately steer you away from getting a Skyline. They are sweet cars, but there is no equivilant car that is sold in canada/us. Meaning you cannot get parts for this car at your local autoparts store.

Importing a JDM car that has a counterpart sold in north america is a great idea, because most of the parts are available at your local auto parts store.

example: 180sx, Silvia K's, Silvia Q's = a USDM 240SX = easy parts to find.

All_Stance: Cool, Thanks for the link.

I realise that there will be difficulties with owning a JDM Vehicle in North America, but I'm prepared for that expense, I know of at least 2 People that have a 180SX *with CA18DET engines* and they have parts sources out of the US, I believe Motorex, but I'm not entirely certain there..

(BTW, there's really only chassis and minor superficial parts that are the same between the JDM 180/s13/s14 and the 240 IIRC, the US bound 240's didn't even get a VLSD... For some reason Canada did * WTF ).

Anyhoo.. if I got a Skyline or whatever it wouldn't be something I'd own for daily driving... I have to pass through check points, and they're set up for LHD cars.

Saint:
$1500? Are you SERIOUS?

Damn man... I almost wish I'd have gotten you to get in touch with a few of your boys and scouted one of those out for me when you were over there...

What a pisser.

Know of anyone that's deploying there sometime soon?

Sorry, man I dont know of anyone going over there anytime soon, but I may be in Tokyo in the next couple of years. But anyway, I can't guarantee the condition of the cars, but on Oki the reason the cars are so cheap are because Marines are rotating off the Island and can't take them home. They were R32s from the 80s and were mostly GTS Type-Ms. The GT-R is an extremely rare car even in Okinawa, I saw less then 10 total between R32, R33, and R34, and the R34 was the most popular, shockingly. I think I only saw about 2 R32 GT-Rs, 2 R33s and the others were R34s, but it was a long time ago when I was in Okinawa, so my memory is a little off.

Hey Gam,

Well I am not sure what there is to look into. But I currently live here in Tokyo. Like they said they go for relatively cheap here. It is different from Okinawa though. Here Skylines are driven mostly by older guys. Well If there is anything you want me to look inot let me know.

Re: Question about Skylines

Yea I have a good deal of friends from Okinawa and they tell me all the time how cheap they are! Their skyline is like our DSM's! People screw around with them then fall offf and sell them for 3-6 thousand!

Wow...

I think I may go that route.

If there is an R33, I'd bet dollars to donuts that it was imported through Motorex... Unless there was a mid-year switch from R32-R33.

Anyhow. As long as it's past its 15 year limit, its good because that way Duties aren't going to be inheirently high.

I might just chase down a Marine or something, ask them what they're planning to ditch their car for, and offer them that plus a bit extra... just to keep a deal sweet. If someone has a GTR, I'll hunt them down, just not yet though, I'm still broke from dumping funds into more responsible things.. I hate being a grown-up sometimes.

Syn13: No no... At this point as I said, it's academic, I don't have that kind of money floating around because I'm currently paying for a house, another car and other stuff. I'm thinking I'll be able to afford a GTR in about a year's time.

I appreciate the offer anyhow.

Procold:
No, you need to register the car by VIN, and it'll show as a skyline.

After 15 years anyhow, it's not a big deal, I've seen older ferrari's that were imported from Britain that were RHD, and there was no problems other than duties.

GAM did you see the Skyline GT-R they are selling on Importconcern? I'm sure those guys would have no problem shipping the car east (after all its allready come from Japan)

And my example with the JDM skyline: Just to add, I, Myself am picking up a 1989 Mazda RX-7 TurboII, Convertable (RHD). There are a LOT of parts on this car that are the exact same as the USDM RX-7. Except you cant get a Turbo2 convert standard in us/can
Re: Question about Skylines

I saw a few of them... I don't relish the idea of paying $35,000 for a GTR in a colour I don't want, when I can get one that I actually DO want, with duties, Taxes, inspection, registration and plates for under $20K from Best Japan Car.

If I were to go to importconcern, I'd fly there and drive it back with a temp permit. I'd do the same thing if I imported to Canada, except I'd go to Vancouver.

you shouldnt really rely on the car to get you home when its fresh off the boat. the battery will be unplugged, and sometimes the alternator. also some cars come over with the battery total dead. Ive also heard of some coming over with blown main fuses.

the car im buying, when it came to vancouver, it was shipped train to edmonton, and the first time the guy took it out the auto trans blew out.

i've also seen some cars come FOB with a totaly worn clutch.

so really, i wouldnt want to depend on the car to get you home when its freshly imported.
