Well i was out of town this weekend and Avis gave me a brand new (4 miles) chevy cobalt LT, so I thought I'd give the thing a run for its money. Checked under the hood for my favorite ecotec.... and I saw plastic. They have one of those ugly engine covers....
Then came the driving. Vermont has very unforgiving roads, and the Cobalt just didnt hold up. Not a lot of get-up-and-go power, below-average brakes, and poor handling on corners despite a stiff, sporty-feeling suspension. My verdict? I'll keep my sunfire.
I rented a sunfire when my cav was getting warranty work, and it felt slow as well.
I guess the ATX kills the fun, my only rational conclusion.
It felt way slower, big pause on the kickdown, and kinda slow to rev.
Maybe it's just a rental thing, they don't rent 5spds after all.
I wish they rented the SS

I was in Texas this weekend (DFW area... just got back) and AVIS also gave me a Cobalt. A white cobalt. A white automatic 4-door cobalt.
What a turd.
Definite improvement over the J-Bodies in reference in interior design and materials... but the engine was a joke. JOKE. Ecotec J's aren't even THAT slow...
Whatever... for $30, I can't say @!#$.

Well lets see, you're expecting to get up and go with a 140 (145 HP) engine on a 3,000 lb car? I don't see it happening.
The Cobalt LT was not designed for performance, it was designed for comfort. I'll bet at least the ride was nice and quiet, with all that sound deadening material in the cabin. Plus the LT is automatic, which only makes it even more slow.
No offense, but this review is sort of non-relevant to me. We all know the LT sedan was NOT designed for performance or handling at all. Front disc, rear drum, 16" wheels, and the "premium ride suspension" which was definately not tuned to handle corners very well.
My verdict? If you were expecting a performance car, you definately rented the wrong Cobalt.
Oh excuse me, it's rated at a 3,200 lb car.
Drive the ss
To me it's really a whole new car, i've driven both coupes. The ss has a whole new aluminum a-arm suspension, bigger sway bars, grippy tires, bigger wheels and better springs etc. Not to mention boost, I agree with Ronus20, you definitely rented the wrong cobalt!
he wasnt just complaining about the speed..... the suspension, brakes, comfort.
the car didnt have alot of speed, but the car took bumps really well, and rode nice
handling was not agile, but was responsive and predictable
thats my take on it
I guess my point is the ATX kills the ECO, an'05 Sunfire Coupe rental was a bit, well quite a bit slower than my Cav.
Not saying that is always the case, but the butt-dyno spoke it to me.
