General Motors and Ford reported lower April vehicle sales as new models failed to perform and sales of large SUVs slipped as buyers took a pass because of high gasoline prices. By contrast, Toyota said its April sales were its best month ever and Nissan saw sales rocket up by 27 percent. Industrywide sales for the month were expected to rise to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of about 17.2 million units, up from a rate of 16.6 million in April last year.
Among companies reporting April sales were:
•Honda posted a best-ever April result of 135,597 vehicles, an increase of 13.6 percent over April 2004. Honda division posted record April car sales of 81,671 units, up 10.2 percent over last year, and record April light truck sales of 53,926 units, an increase of 19.2 percent over year-ago results. Year-to-date, Honda's total vehicle sales of 443,779 rose 4.0 percent over the same period last year. Acura sales rose 11.9 percent to a new April record of 19,102 Acura vehicles, the second best month in the Acura's 19-year history.
•General Motors dealers sold 385,939 new cars and trucks in April. Overall, GM sales were down 7 percent. GM's truck sales (215,321) were down 17 percent while car sales (170,618) were up 3.5 percent.
•Hyundai announced April sales of 40,958 vehicles, the third-best month in Hyundai's history, and a 16.9 percent increase over April 2004.
•Audi reported April sales of 7,202 vehicles, an increase over April 2004 sales of 7,137.
•Nissan reported 91,621 total sales in April, an increase of 27% over last year, the best April sales in the history of Nissan North America. Sales for Infiniti, Nissan's luxury brand, were up 12.3 percent from last April with 11,639 units sold.
•Toyota reported its best-ever overall sales month, including the best April for the ninth consecutive year, with 210,466 vehicles, an increase of 21.3 percent over April 2004. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 717,702 which represents an increase of 13.6 percent compared to the same period last year. Toyota Division recorded its best-ever overall sales month of 184,402 vehicles, an increase of 23.7 percent and the Lexus Division reported best-ever April sales of 26,064 units, up 6.6 percent.
•Volvo reported that its sales were up slightly for the month of April, with an increase of 0.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
•Mazda said it sold a total of 22,249 cars and trucks, a 2.6 percent increase over last April's results.
•Porsche announced April retail sales of 3,065 cars, a decrease of 8 percent compared to April of last year.
•Ford sold a total of 281,292 cars and trucks from Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo in April, down 2 percent from a year ago.
•Chrysler Group, which consists of the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands, posted sales of 206,546 vehicles in the U.S., an increase of nine percent.
•Mercedes-Benz says it posted its highest April on record with sales of 18,805 units, a two percent increase compared to the same month last year.
•BMW's sales fell 5 percent to 25,382 units in April, as sales of its core BMW brand vehicles fell 10 percent to 21,072 units while deliveries of its Mini brand subcompact rose 31 percent to 4,310 cars.
