VW 2.0 to GTI Swap
Wednesday, May 04, 2005 7:27 PM
I have a question for you VW'ers on here. My buddy is contemplating swapping a salvaged GTI motor into his '02 2.0L Golf. Both of us are new to VW's, but we have knowledge of cars and have plenty of help(family mechanics) if need be. I was wondering if anyone has seen or helped someone do this. Would it be easier just to get a new turbo and design your own setup? Opinions and experience are welcome because right now we are seeing what kind of mess this would get us into. Thanks.

Also any reliable sites where we could find more info would also be appreciated.

only in 99 and 00 was the 2.0 an optional motor in the gti
so your statement doesnt make entire sense either as there is more than one gti motor

a 1.8T swap is feasible, but I'd go with an Audi swap, as I remember from when I had a VW, it's the higher rated engine, although the VR6 is a nice engine also

AUdi does have the higher rated 1.8T's the TT's with the dual exhaust were the 220 HP ones, you get a slightly bigger turbo on the audi (K04 instead of a K03 if i rememeber right) but honestly VW engine swaps suck, with how much electric @!#$ there is its nto worth it, just trade it in for GTI, it will be alot cleaner and nicer thn doingng the swap yourself, not to mention the car will still hold some retail value if its a GTI, not a Golf someone tried to frankenstein and engine into

Electric @!#$s not real hard, everything is color coded for your to plug in. I just replaced a 2.8V6 in my brothers 98 A4. the design on most of everything on the car is pretty odd though. All the motors are expensive as @!#$. the best motor to have though would be the 2.7V6 TT from the S4 or an 2.8 froma late 97+ A4. has 190 hp & over 200lbs tq. & the S4 turbos can bolt on to the 2.8 but they also make S/C's for it. Downfall of the 2.8 is the the high compression if you want to boost

BUT Now you know, cause you're Jon Doe, in a black bag, a tag on your toe, I built the Honda, I felt the pain, you're victimized with no one to blame, you're just another victim kid.....

I meant a 1.8T. Thanks for the input though. It sounds like his best bet would be to add some bolt ons and call it a day then.

Ya, dont bother with the swap...Either put on a turbo or trade the car in. Or, keep it a 2.slow and go all suspension. You can throw on a chip, but thats a waste of money. Do more research before you do anything though, spend your money wisely.
Not much difference between the TT 220hp and the 180hp 1.8Ts, just injectors, intake manifold, turbo is the same KO4. Software might be different, but that can be changed with different chips.
