Mazda is readying a 'hot hatch' version of the Mazda3 — The 3 MPS (Mazda Performance Series) uses the same 2.3-liter engine as the bigger 6 MPS rated at 256HP, and this could make the car the hottest hatch on the market.
The 256 horsepowered Mazda 3 MPS will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and will go on sale shortly after. Its aggressive styling affirms Mazda is quickly shaking off its fuddy-duddy image, helped by the RX-8 and MX-5 sports cars.
These are likely to be joined in future by a new version of the classic rotary-engined RX-7 two-door coupe. This would sit between the MX-5 and the RX-8 and be powered by the RX-8's powerful rotary engine. Mazda insiders maintain the car will be built, but it is still at least three years away.
What this means to you: Continuing the trend in North America, Mazda is attempting to boost its brand by shedding its dull skin and pumping more exciting models.

I fell in love with the Mazda 6, but was a tad too pricey for me.....
So I waited for the Mazda 3 to arrive, and alas, same sexy styling as the 6.....just a smaller version and in my price range......
Now that I'm making a bit more cash, I could afford the Mazda 6, but I'm now looking for more HP than that......and in comes the Mazda 3 with the help of MazdaSpeed.
Isn't it funny how we always strive for the car that is just a little bit out of our price range? And when we can afford the car, we push ourselves a little more and wonder what else we want? I don't know if anyone else does this but I find myself doing this a lot.

This 2.3 seems to be a good engine considering they are going to boost it like that for 2 cars.
An Rx-7 priced below an Rx-8 would be nice. Lighter and less frills would be just how i want it. I still want a back seat thought.

Well it sounds pretty cool, but I don't really think its a wise move on Mazda's part. Basically they will be giving their smallest car (the 3) more power and performance than their flagship, the RX-8. It just doesn't make sense from a marketing standpoint.
Unless perhaps Mazda is figuring on boosting the power of the RX-8 (turbo?) above 265HP, but I don't see that happening in the near future. I think it would be wiser to make the MPS about 210HP, and then underrate it by a few horses
Any ideas on price? I'd say it would have to at least be $24K, about on par with the Acura RSX-S...

I wonder if Ford will find a way to fit this in the Focus as well......?
I'm curious to see what it looks like myself...
and just beacause something has comprable power
doesnt mean it has the same fit and finish
or handling characteristics
Ford has already been mapping out new SVT products.....and the Focus will be seeing turbo (at least as ive read online)......maybe its the same motor?

i will mortgage my future faster if its awd
well there is going to be a mazdaspeed RX-8 so it will have more power then the mazdaspeed 3. the mazdaspeed badges arnt the normal production cars, they will be in limited numbers. from everything ive heard the 3 will still be front wheel drive, if you want all wheel drive go with the mazdaspeed 6, it will have awd.
this is the only real reason why i havn't started modding out my 3, i wanted to wait and see if they did bring out the ms 3. looks like i may be trading mine in in a year or two.
