Here is Pontiac's worst fear for the 2006 Solstice roadster: Sales start out strong when the car reaches dealerships in July but fade quickly.
Mark Reuss, executive director of General Motors' performance division, says Pontiac's plan to keep that from happening involves taking the Solstice racing. The low-slung car -- the first four-cylinder, rear-wheel-drive two-seater from GM -- will be offered with a slew of factory-engineered performance engine and suspension parts so weekend racers can compete in Sports Car Club of America events against the Mazda Miata.
And there may be at least one other body style in the works for the Solstice.
Reuss showed a picture of a car labeled the 2007 Solstice GT during a panel discussion at the SAE World Congress. The photo showed the car in coupe form with a sloping, fixed roof, like the Audi TT.
He would not confirm that the car is planned for production. Reuss said he's pushing for a hardtop, either fixed or removable -- a requirement before the Solstice can be raced.
"We want to take the showroom stock B class from the Miata," said Reuss.
Other panelists said automakers can attract younger buyers and enthusiasts by offering a wide variety of performance parts and accessories that enable customization.
"MazdaSpeed has brought new customers to Mazda," said Robert Davis, senior vice president of product development and quality for Mazda's North American operations. Referring to Toyota's Scion division, he said: "It doesn't take a new brand to attract younger buyers."
MazdaSpeed is the automaker's performance brand.
Ford is rebuilding its lineup of SVT performance vehicles. SVT vehicles sometimes appeal to buyers who would not normally buy a Ford product, said Hau Thai-Tang, who was chief engineer of the new Mustang before taking over as Ford director of advanced product creation and head of SVT.
"Ninety-two percent of (Mustang) Cobra customers wouldn't have considered a Ford product," Thai-Tang said.
Thai-Tang and his counterpart at the Chrysler group, Daniel Knott, director of Chrysler's SRT performance division, said that part of their strategy is for engineers to visit racetracks and talk directly to the amateur racers who buy their products.

put down a turbo or charger and it could be the nicest 2 place, rear-wheel drive experience for a 4 stroke cylinder...

any pics of this gt solstice?
why would someone buy a soltice that cost 20k and is worth 10k the minute you drive it off the lot. when you can buy a miata for a little more and have a car thats still got some value a few years down the road. and not feel like your getting raped when you want to sell or trade it in? go GM!
They look cool, but I would still go with a used S2000 if I were going to buy a roadster...

that would never happen gm's more worried about giving you garbage for a high price. the only car they put money and effort into is the vette becouse its there flagship car. everything else is trash. there more worried about building huge suv's. they dropped the zeta platform for that exact reason. its the cash crop. gm is way behind when it comes to there average cars. the cobalt and g6 is another failed atempt to compete with the competition. semi independent rear suspension RULES!

Why would someone want to join a GM car forum board to bitch about GM products when you don't even own a GM vehicle? Get a life TROLL.

Cars only have a certain value because people are willing to pay it... The only reason a Honda has more trade in value is not because it's a better car, but because thats what people are expected to pay for it...
How do you figure that the Cobalt and the G6 are failures. First of all the Cobalt has been available to the public for less than six months, and during that six months I've seen a ton of Cobalts being sold. And as for the G6, it's a HUGE improvement over the Grand Am, it's everything the GA was with the addition of style, speed, and economy.
For anyone to predict that GM cars are going to be failures before they have a fair shake is retarded. Maybe you've forgotten GM is the biggest car manufacturer in the world. They built and sold more cars last year, then any company.... Perhaps you don't know everything, perhaps the guys working in the big office buildings making millions of dollars a year for GM know alittle more than some twit that signed up for a GM forum.
Look I'm not trying to be a fanboi, because I know it seems like they do some stupid stuff, and a few years ago I would have agreed with you. My biggest problem with GM is the fact that they had cars that weren't even close to competing in HP, and the ones that were quick only came in an automatic transmission. Their problem is they were not looking at the true performance aspect of any of there vehicles. This has changed. You can tell by just looking and feeling the Cobalt and the G6 that they are extremely better built than there predicessors (Cavalier and Grand Am, respectively).
My suggestions to those of you that think they know more about the automobile market that General Motors is to call someone at GM and explain to them why you think they're stupid. And when they finish laughing at you because they realize you're just an idiot with an over inflated ego, they'll tell you to go buy a Ford.
I've driven a G6, and I am impressed... I'm waiting for the Solstice to hit the pavement, but if they can get the hardtop, I'll be a happy guy. (had bad experiences with Miata's, but I still love them
)

G6, Cobalt and LaCrosse are slow sellers. There is a 4 month (117 days) supply of Cobalts, Lacrosse with 3 months (95 days) and G6 with 2months at (68 days). When GM averages about 2 months(60 days) in dealers as of first week of April 2005. For the record, Corvette is at 22days supply because they are hot.
Sales have been low compared to their predecessors too.
Buick Lacrosse in Q1 of 2005 sold: 19,281
Buick Regal in Q1 of 2004: 23,701
Chevrolet Cobalt in Q1 of 2005: 29,192
Chevrolet Cavalier in Q1 of 2004: 50,061
Pontiac G6 in Q1 of 2005: 20,712
Pontiac Grand-Am Q1 of 2004:37,246
So consumers are not particularly giddy for GM lately.
Finally I don't have a pic to show you guys, but it is very close to this.

I am definetly considering a soltice as my first from the lot brand new car
this is down the line... but its a hot car and I'd love to own one
so is the solstice still getting the supercharger??? I wonder if Dodge is still thinking about the razor. GM's cars are getting cheap as hell, you can get a brand new cavalier for six grand if you buy it straight up (no financing)
you can say whatever you want about the cobalt, it's got the face of an SI and the ass of a neon, it's got the same solid rear axle since 81 exct. it's still an improvement, get one fully loaded with recaro seats, LSD, supercharger and an actually decent manual tranny. i also think the equal length axles and rear disks were a nice touch. it's bullcrap that this is comming out now and not a decade ago but what are you going to do?
I've got faith. GM is working something out. not now but maybe in 10 years, they will be back on top, there is just way too much competition now. it's not chevy, ford, dodge.... it's chevy, ford, dodge, honda, toyota, mazda, nissan, mitsubishi, volkswagen / audi, and any other kraut car, pasta rocket, or rice burner that i forgot. don't feed me bull about these imports always being here, when i was growing up, if you had anything other than the big 3 you were a communist or a yuppie.
i saw a base model cobalt on the lot, wearing pirelli's, something's going down, GM knows it they just don't want to back the wrong horse.
CAR GODS MADE THE 1.6 SOHC TO MAKE US 2.2 OHV GUYS FEEL BETTER.
exhaust is gay buttttt performance parts for the solstice means performance parts for the sky!!!
they best has a SC or turbo setup for that 2.4 by the time the sky comes out
i beleive its supposed to get a lsj motor sometime
also
if all the cars gm makes are crap yamaha suzuki
what about caddies?
what was the last gm vehicle you drove? a cavalier? wow
you are upset because their econo car isnt a caddy?
well im sorry for you
and a twist beam is not to far from a semi independent
not equal not not too far off
Turbocharge the sky/solstice w/ an eco that can hold some power and i'll cut the check today.
Put a gay ass supercharger on the 4 and GM deserves to die. Even though my hometown would die w/ it.
