Chevy or Dodge 4x4 turck?
Sunday, March 13, 2005 9:59 PM
I am in the market for a truck. I'm looking at a 2002 chevy silverado 5.3, 4x4 extended cab and the 2002 Dodge Ram 4.7, 4x4 crew cab. Who owns one of these? Any major problem with either? What about power and fuel milage? Thanks.

i like the dodge 100 times more on the outside and the chev 100 times more inside and to drive. i have used both vehicles a bit (company trucks) and the chev just rides nicer and has alot of GO to it with the 5.3. You know even the 4.8 has ALOT of jam oin the GM...i couldnt tell the difference between the 4.8 and the 5.3. the 4.8 has 275hp or 285hp....pretty damn good and it saves you like a grand off the sticker.

My Uncle just bought an 02 Sierra about 6 months ago, just like that Silverado you posted. The 5.3 is an AWESOME engine, 300hp/330lbs torque, and he still gets over 25mpg on the highway towing a trailer with a 4-wheeler and all the camping/hunting gear in it, averaging 115-130 the whole way.

We did this consitantly for a 16 hour trip up north, there was 3 trucks all 01-03 GMC/Chevy with the 5.3, all towing trailers, and not one got less the 25mpg the whole trip. Now that is great gas mileage for 300hp if you ask me.

The Dodge, although some may think they look nicer, I highly doubt the 4.7 will even come close the the Chevy's power : mileage ratio.

Also, keep in mind that GMC/Chevy truck hold their value better the just about any truck on the road, far better the Dodge and Ford anyhow, the Toyota's are pretty close in retail value though.

Incase you can't tell, I think you should get the Chevy.

3 trucks, similar loads, some results. 25mpg average. You don't want to believe it, who gives a crap, it's not my truck. Why would I make this up if it's not even my truck? Nice try though.

was the truck extended cab, long bed, short bed, 4x4, 2wd? and by "averaging 115-130 the whole way" do you mean speed?

I dont know who you think you're kidding, go check all the websites.. you wont find a single one getting 24mpg. a RCSB with the 4.8L gets about 20mpg, if towing a trailer means 4 more mpg then i better do it because my truck is getting 12 right now.

I don't care what websites say, I go by "real world" experiences, not writen estimates on random websites. I only know what we logged each time we gassed up. Like I said to the other guy, if you don't believe it, who cares.

As I said IN MY FIRST POST, 3 trucks, 5.3l engine, extend cab, short box, 4x4 (not in use of course), all with similar loads, all driving between 115-130 on the highway, averaged 25mpg. This not just one truck one time, this is 3 trucks on the same trip. We logged several tanks of gas, with the same results every time.

I just don't understand why you two are having such a tough time reading what I am writing here. I am not asking your opinion on what we did, I am telling you what happened. 25mpg, 3 different trucks on the same trip. Accept it or not, it happened, why argue?

I don't know who YOU are trying to kid, but a 4.8 better get more then 20mpg, hell my 15 year old Silverado with 330,000 on it gets about that much, and it hasn't had a tune up in years.

So 25mpg TOWING A TRAILER.. that means it gets about 30-35 HWY mph w/o one right?
Re: Chevy or Dodge 4x4 turck?
Tuesday, March 15, 2005 6:08 PM
No, more like 26-28mpg. A 4-wheeler on a trailer is hardly heavy. I really don't care to argue this anymore, if you don't believe me, fine. Get over it and move on.

I'd go Chevy or GMC. I don't know why but Dodge's blow their Transmissions between 70,000-90,000 miles. I drove one for a company for a year and 2nd gear blew on me out in the country and the transmission repair shop said Dodge's usually blow 2nd gear because of weak parts between the above stated mileage. My uncles Dakota just blew it's tranny at 80,000+miles last year.

25 mpg, not unless it was a Diesel, sorry but your math was wrong somewhere. I've got the 4.7L in my Durango and get about 13 mpg in the city, if I'm lucky I'll see 19 mpg on the highway, but not more then that. 20 mpg is high for a truck, just the sheer weight of one unloaded means for low gas mileage.

As for the topic at hand, I prefer the Dodge, mostly because of my family's track record with Mopars, the one's that we've owned have been teh vehicles that we've had the fewest problems with and have had the best build quality of the vehicles that we've owned, and we've owned vehicles from all of the Big 3.

Ditto. The brand new 2005 F-150 are sweet. if you want used get the silverado.

And as far as the 24 MPG while towing a trailer... you're full of it. A 5.3 sierra will have a hard time breaking 20 mpg on the highway without a trailer. I KNOW # PEOPLE WHO OWN THEM!!! You're full of crap...or can do math worth @#$^.

I have a 2002 Dodge 4x4 1500. Very nice truck, very hard on gas. I have the 4.7 engine just like you are looking at. Any big truck is going to be a pig on gas no matter what anyone says. If you are looking to buy a big 4x4 truck gas is not the concern since you already can expect that. Personally if I was to do it again, I would have got the new F150 but at the time they waren't out yet and weren't coming out for a few more months and I had to get a new truck so I chose the Dodge because I loved the sporty look of it and the big 20's. But once again the Ford F150 is alot more in $$ then most of the other trucks. So just go with what's in your price range. I do love my dodge but I am selling it this summer and getting a new BMW 325ix just since I don't need the big truck anymore and I want something better on gas.
