The 2008 successor to the Pontiac GTO will be joined by performance-oriented siblings at Chevrolet and luxury editions at Buick late in the decade
The next-generation GTO will be built on a new General Motors architecture known internally as the Zeta platform. It is basically an evolution of the current chassis that underpins the 2005 GTO, which is assembled in Australia by GM's Holden subsidiary.
The new GTO, however, will be built in Michigan, Inside Line has learned. It will be joined by a new sporty coupe and companion convertible model at Chevrolet. The bow-tie division reportedly will not resurrect the Camaro name on the car, but is said to be considering using the Monte Carlo badge on this new midsize rear-drive model.
Unlike the GTO, which will continue to be powered by a high-output Corvette V8, the Chevy two-doors, which are due around 2009, reportedly will offer buyers a choice of V6 and V8 engines.
Pontiac also will get a new rear-drive sedan, which internally is being referred to as the G8. Offered with V6 and V8 engines, it will debut around 2009, and will take the place of the front-wheel-drive Bonneville, which is being phased out later this year. It may also supplant the front-drive Grand Prix.
The production version of Buick's stunning Velite convertible concept is also expected to share the Zeta chassis, but the car will focus more on luxury than performance. Although the Velite is expected to be built in Michigan at the same factory as the Pontiac and Chevy models, a rear-drive Buick luxury sedan is expected to be imported from Holden in Australia.
What this means to you: GM is gambling hundreds of millions of dollars that Americans will embrace a new generation of midsize rear-drive performance and luxury models later in this decade.

So does that mean no Camaro EVER or just on this platform?
screw the camaro BRING BACK THE TA!!!!!!!!
-Borsty
to me the TA was always the camaro's fat cousin.
@!#$ the monte carlo..that things' been a piece of garbage ever since they went fwd...
Good news. But hardly suprising considering the success of the 300C... and with the mustangs sporting a new look...
well, im looking forward to it.

Maybe Im just pissed, pissed that my freinds are spineless, What else would you
call abandoment some night, when you're in a fight, and they could make things right?
Spineless. I miss some of my old friends, the ones who you could count on,
bet a huge amount on, the fact that they'd always have your back... Its like a kick in
the sack, just knowing, you've got nothing to fall back on. @!#$ this, Im done.
dont i remember correctly, or didnt GM decide to purchase again the rights to the name "Chevelle" last year and the rights are good through 2015 or something like that. They should bring back the chevelle. How's that for a RWD platform with a Vette v8 in it. But they never learn, do they?
it all sounds good to me. but i really wanna see pictures. too bad for now
Andy
it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
ZZP XP cam, 1.6 rockers, 105# springs, speedbuilt FWI, 3.3" modular pulley, TOG headers,
3" exhaust, flomatched injectors
'97 GTP 14.06@100.6mph pre cam w/ 3.5" pulley, I/E
In typical GM fashion. They will promise the world and fall just short of the target...

As long as they don't do to the Monte Carlo what DCX has done to the Charger by making it a sedan I'll be happy. Hell if they make it look halfway decent and offer a ss version I'll be first in line too buy one. They should bring the Caprice/Impala SS back to large rwd platform as well.

It means that most likely this will be a Camaro replacement, similar to how the Cobalt was the Cavalier replacement. So in other words, yes, most likely no more Camaro... maybe not ever, because who knows what they will want to do in 5-30 years, but for now, no Camaro.

That's BS. I officially hate GM now.
Nobody wants the damn Monte Carlo. I'm sorry for people who own them, but the only good Monte was the 3800 Supercharged Monte.
They're ugly, FWD, and a disgrace to the Monte Carlo name.
Now no Camaro soon? I guess millions of e-mails asking to bring f-body back were thrown out for the 3 people who still want the Monte Carlo.
MiKeDiRnTRuLeZ wrote:but the only good Monte was the 3800 Supercharged Monte.
Not necessarily, the 1970 SS454 wasn't bad
. 1995 and up is nothing more than a Lumina to me.

I agree 110%
biggest mistake by gm was discontinuing the camaro instead of redesigning it like ford did with the mustang
Last I remember GM was under contract to ONLY build any car under the Camaro Marque in their CND plant (which built the previous Camaro's).
Since they don't want to do that, they are bailing on the Camaro name to supposedly save millions.
In the end, we'll get a new 'Camaro' in a few years... but it won't be under the Camaro name... most likely Chevelle or Monte Carlo, etc.
IMO, fu<k 'em all. I'll never Buy a new car so that is of no concern to me... and the only GM product I'll ever again consider purchasing is an LS series 'Vette or F-Body (and then only for their cost/performance... build quality, reliability, etc is still a joke).
Screw you GM. Screw. You.

Borsty: The Camaro and Firebird will not come back as Nameplates unless they can get the Quebec plant that made them up until '02 back up and running. There is a standing agreement that no GM car bearing the nameplate of Camaro or Firebird will be built outside that town (forget which.. sadly) until about 2050.. IIRC

If thats the case why do they say in their truck commercials 'The longest lasting trucks' with proof to back it up? Why are there hundereds of thousands of 1st and 2nd gen Jbodies still reliably running as well as millions of other GM vehicles from the past few decades?
and one other thing
