Just got it off the news...Toyota is taking the unprecedented move of suspending sales of the vehicles associated with the sticky gas pedals until a complete solution is implemented.
HUGE.

does pressing down the gas pedal in a toyota really make a difference anyway?
1989 Turbo Trans Am #82, 2007 Cobalt SS G85
I must say, I think I like this move. It shows that they care about the problem. It's an excuse to slow production anyways, which isn't all that uncommon now days
I don't mean to state the obvious, but...they have absolutely no choice in the matter. Every car that would roll of the assembly line could mean millions of dollars in liability exposure. They are not doing this for you and me, they are doing it for themselves...and in doing so, engaging perhaps the most serious damage control we've ever witnessed an automaker have to perform.
My prediction: Toyota is fcuked. This will reverberate across the globe for years. Unintended acceleration is an automaker's worse nightmare, and they've not reacted honestly to the problem until now, even though they appear to have known about it previously.
Rest assured...the ambulance-chasing lawyers are placing advertisements EVERYWHERE as we speak. Toyota is done.

ON CTV...Toyota Canada is saying that there is nothing to worry about with your current Toyota. As long as you have the proper floor mats. I'm not sure that makes any sense.
There have been alot of issues with Toyotas these days. Rusting suspension mounts. Crash test data going missing when a discovery request was made....Hmm
Audi survived the wrath of unintended acceleration. It's my understanding that it is undestood that it was driver error in Audi's case.

I'd say ford is....GM....eh, not so much. they're trying though!
states 3500 sales loss aday plus the amount of panic in the franchise now due to this. Its is great that they are taking responsibilities for this but if u read they not only should of did it right away instead of five days but they were forced by the NTC(national traffic commision) to halt all sales of but new and used vehicles under this recall. American makers need to Jump on this like a fat kid on a cupcake. now it was said that a american car was in to but this was the end of the line run pont vibes(due to matrix) and there is only 6 thats right 6 effected units.
ITS A EASY DAM FIX !!!!!!!!!!!!
get RID of the dam drive by wire crap , give us our gas pedal back
i gotta say everytime i hear about that cop in cali that died and killed his family , i laugh like crazy being a veteran officer , he of all people shoulda known to kick the trans into neutral , or shut the car off
if i could stop my 70 camaro with crappy front disk/rear drum brakes from 120mph when the throttle pinned wide open , he should been able to either stop it or kill it
at the worst he woulda been out a motor , instead of his family

I hate to tell you this, but if Toyota owners jump ship, it won't be to an American brand. From what I've seen, they'll either go to Honda or rarely, Nissan. A very few might wander to other brands, but not many.

agreed!!! i hate drive by wire, especially for performance, kills throttle response. my moms nissan murano had it and every time i floored it, it took a while to get going because of bad throttle response
Quote:
get RID of the damn drive by wire crap , give us our gas pedal back
I lack a vocabulary strong enough to express how much I despise Drive-by-Wire throttle. The driver no longer controls the throttle, he merely suggests tho the computer how much throttle is desired. There are only two reasons that I can come up with for the reasoning behind the whole damn system:
1. The car's throttle can be remotely disabled. I'd rather risk a stolen vehicle than let anyone cut my power remotely. (I also hate OnStar, by the way)
2. I don't know if any manufacturer does this, but you could make a car seem more powerful by fudging the throttle response a bit. You push the pedal 40%, but the computer opens the throttle 60%. Wow, Mr. salesperson, this little car really goes!
This whole thing is a welcome slap in the face to Toyota and the use of DBW systems. But will they ever go away? Hell, no. Once something is standard across the board, it never goes back.
So, that's my rant...

that. i just dont get it. throw it into neutral. keep the car on, so you can still steer it.
You overestimate the skills of the average Toyota user. Panic usually means stand on the brake pedal while screaming. It can happen pretty fast for these poor folks.

i remember my 96 cav dying on my in the middle of a bridge while on the way to school. with traffic traveling 70+ with a big rig in view.
nothing that throwing my little 2.2ohv with 3sp into neutral couldn't fix. lol

it works , ill agree its not the best but anything is better than letting the run off at wide open throttle

Surely a man of your intelligence has got to be kidding...
Toyota is not done, when was the last time GM or Ford did a voluntary recall of this magnitude. This is Toyota's second voluntary recall like this. If you want do a search of the 1996-2000 Toyota Tacoma Frame recall. In short Toyota recalled these trucks because of some faulty frame issues, if the vehicle failed the inspection, they put the customer in a loaner vehicle immediately. Then got the paperwork going and gave people 150% of kbb.com RETAIL VALUE. But i'm sure you knew that already. Oh and as I'm sure you know also that probably 80% bought Toyota's with that money and of those 80% of them got Tacoma's again. At least we stand behind our product enough to say ya know what, lest stop selling them until we get this resolved so there are no further tragedies. What about my recall notice on my Cobalt that I have to get some foam installed in the headliner so it doesn't pierce my skull in a side collision. What about Ford's recall with accidental airbag deployment, surely that cant be safe to drive with a hot blown airbag in your face, nose bloodied and powder everywhere....Im sure that couldnt cause loss of life..
Get real...

yup and with a brake system that works off vaccum assist... a wide open engine aint going to provide much if any.
anybody ever tried slamming on the brake after the throttle was down to the wood WHILE doing both at the same time? the brake might as well not even be there.
thats where the panic ensues.
however, panic or not... if you cant figure out to throw the damn thing in neutral (if you turn the key off it locks the wheel so that isnt going to work unless you turn it to the on position after doing it, and if you cannot figure out that throwing it into neutral would be you're best bet you are not going to figure all that out, at least not before you slam you're self into something first.)
hertz just pulled ALL toyota vehicles from the books as rentable and are being parking across the globe. toyota is F'D.
and paul... LMAO. "may the best car win", buddie

Last i checked Toyota is the largest automaker in the world.
When GM held this title they had recalls every week and survived just fine for decades like that. This is Toyotas first or as said here second in it's history. They will be fine.

You miss a key point...no GM recalls had killed this many people, or violated this many laws. Nor had any of them been so hotly covered by our voracious, kill-anything-that-moves "media".
The damage to the reputation of Toyota is immense. Even now, there are throngs of people afraid to even
drive their Toyotas. The long-term effcts of all these recalls and problems as of late, capped off by THIS monster, will be felt for years to come, Worldwide.
It is the equivalent of an automotive Waterloo. You may wish otherwise, but I think you're mistaken.
By the by...set aside your media-brainwashing long enough to go look at JDPower surveys on customer satisfation. You appear to still be buying into some old, old kneejerk here. GM has pulled even with the Japanese automaker in every segment. Don't take my word for it...go look. You seem to need that reality check.

not a cop man
and yes im still laughing at that stupid son of a bisch for killing himself and his family !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its his fault they all died , being he was a cop he has had specific training to help in situations like the 1 that killed them all
my old 70 SS350 camaro , made less vacuum than most cars today and being a 25 year old brake system at the time i had the throttle stick wide open , not to mention 4-5 times more HP and TQ than his crapyota , and guess what i managed to get it to a dead stop from well over 120mph
just takes knowing a little bit to control your situation , and i havent had any where near the training as a cop does behind the wheel

I am not brainwashed by any means Bill. Noone these days makes a really bad car...to an extent. I live quite in reality. But I wish the media would point out certain things. How come noone is printing in thier headlines...CTS Pedals Sticking in Toyota's. Because noone gives a @!#$ about CTS...Negativity to Toyota sells copies and makes you turn the tv on. Your in denial if you cant agree with that. And as far as some as your other posts I've seen about knocking Toyota off thier high horse and so on, you do realize there are some hard working people here in America that rely on Toyota to make a living, including myself. Your comments are off base as far as I'm concerned. That would be like the company who makes your Turbo's (Mitsu if I'm not mistaken, I could be wrong if so let me know) having a recall on all the 16g's and such and saying they spool and get too hot and cause fires and kill people. You ceratinly would feel the backlash from that and that would directly affect your income. How would that feel? It would suck, wouldn't it Bill? I would never wish that upon you however. But I'm glad you take joy in it.
