hi there jbo! My cousing is aving issues with her Jetta. About 2 weeks she had a coolant leak that left her stranded in the middle of the street. she took it to a mechanic across from where the car died to have it diagnose. the mechanic replaced a hose (all she was able to tell me). she did not drive the car after that day until today. On her way back from work, she clled me and said that the car was overheating. I went to take a look at it but did not see any leaks. There was a check engine light which was diagnosed by autozone as codes p0305 and p0118. After driving the car for a while, the temp needle climbed to the red area in the temp gauge. I got out of the car and check the hoses and the coolant level in the reservoir. They were all ok. I grabbed the upper rad hose and it was very hot and under pressure. I could feel as if there were air bubbles inside the hose.
When I got home i looked into the codes.
P0305 = cyl #5 misfire => weird because the car is a 4 cyl 1.8T. wtf?
P0118 = ect circuit high=> faulty ect sensor, poor electrical connection
I did some homework and read on the net about overheating and it sems to be a common issue w/ jettas. Her car only has 4X,XXX miles. Where should I start looking into? upper rad hose was hot which tells me that probably tstat is working properly. No coolant leaks which eliminates another probable cause. Next will be to check the ect sensor itself. Any ideas where it is and how to get to it? If that comes out ok, the last part will be the water pump (common failure) which would totally suck because she will have to cough up the nearly $700 to repair at only 4x,xxx miles!
Neways, if anyone (darkstars?) has any ideas or suggestions on how to approach the issue please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Check the fuse holder above the battery. Make sure the fan comes on.
Other than that, they do have problems with the water pumps. Release the cooling system pressure by taking off the cap, then pull the smalle hose off the resevoir with the engine running and see if coolant comes out. Rev it to about 2k rpms.

i will check the oil. it is doing the same thing as when the head gasket in my cavy went. coolant spilling out the overflow tank. it does have a misfire so that could be a posibility. i wil kee you guys updated.

Your getting the cylinder 5 thing because it's being scaned with a genaric scan tool, chanes are the real fault is multiple cylinder. There is a very very VERY large recall about to hit for ignition coils on 100,000+ cars.
The ect fault, on the drivers side of the head under the plastic covers is the black plastic flange on the side of the head, sticking out te top is the coolant temp sensor, unplug it and look at the body of the sensor, it's either green or black, if it hasn't been replaced already it's black, call your local dealership with your Vin numer and find out if the warranty extension for the temp sensor applies to that car. Either way replace it with a nice green one.
As for the overheating. Take the bottle cap off remove the small line into the top/side of the bottle and aim it into the bottle. Have someone rev it and hold it at like 2000-2500 rpm, you want steady continuous flow out of that little hose. Chances are it's not gonna flow @!#$, initial isn't flowing 99.9% of the time the plastic impeller on the water pump broke.
Thermostat will cause a "malfunction on cooling system" fault (so will havin the coolant mixture to strong), I've yet to see a VW overheat from a thermostat.
If the water pump is bad replace the timing belt and tensioner at the same time (doesn't hurt to do the roller as well but those are typically only problems on passats and TDI's)

my brother actually has a 2002 jetta 1.8T, and his done the same thing, i garuntee that its the water pump, they typically go out between 40-60k miles on vw's. if she takes it to a dealer and gets it all fixed for $700 thats not bad at all really. when my brothers went out we checked 3-4 different dealers and the cheapest was a little over $1300 but darkstars is right chances are the plastic propeller broke inside and the dealers normally install a new water pump timing chain and thermostat just to be on the safe side.
If you lived close by i'd say come onnove and I'll do the water pump for alot less then $700

mine was like 275 for everything including coolant, motor mount bolts, etc and thats a metal impeller water pump. I was quoted at the dealership for over 1400 for the job. I did it myself in like 6 and a half hours.
ECS and MJM are both great companies to purchase from, I've done business with both and have nothing but great things to say about both. Great suggestions from Darkstars for sure, I'd try those before you purchase anything. If it is your water pump and you need to do a full timing belt change then make sure you know what you are doing, it's not for a novice and is a very long and detailed job. I'd probably take King Dickstars up on his offer if I were you.
