The DeLorean Motor Company is a brand without a car and the Pontiac Solstice is a car without a brand. That leaves the company wondering: if John DeLorean were still alive, would he try to save Pontiac? Or one Pontiac?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As we all know, the folding of both Pontiac and Saturn has left the small RWD platform without a home. It also left GM's Wilmington, Delaware plant without a purpose. The new DeLorean Motor Company, which we toured last summer, is currently the main keeper of the DeLorean flame and up-keeper of the world's fleet of DeLoreans. They're also producing a small series of upgraded second generation cars. Could they also carry forward the spirit of a company enriched by John DeLorean's vigor and genius?
"JZD always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts," said James Espey, Vice President of the DeLorean Motor Company.
The company has released the above drawings and acquired a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe for evaluation. DMC also says they're excited about the prospect of "putting several hundred people back to work" in Wilmington, though it's unclear at how much capital it would take to acquire the plant and the source of funding for such an endeavor.
Until we get more information we're just going to sit back and enjoy the prospect of GM's Kappa platform getting a second life.

Well, that would save at least a part of Pontiac and maybe give DMC something more to sell, but I'm a little miffed on a stainless steel solstice. But then again a stainless steel bodied car is a trademark for DMC. All in all, we'll have to see what happens.

I can dig it. Honestly I would ljust be happy to see the platform live. The Solstice/Sky is an amazing car IMO.
It would be great if they kept it alive. not only for keeping people at work but I have considered getting one in the future.
Does this mean it will have a flux capacitor, time circuits, and a Mr. Fusion?
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour, you're gonna see some serious @!#$!
Seeing it continue would be awesome. Is this a hoax or the real deal?

Will it come with a flux capacitor?

I'm really not liking the front end in the pic - it takes away from the unique styling of the solstice and makes it look more like a jag or aston martin.
That said, it would be cool to see the platform live on. I hope they'd keep the LNF
I was reading some stuff, and they want to use the LSJ motor......since it is a crate motor.....

An LSJ kappa would be pretty slick. I thought it could not meet the latest round of eco sandards?
I'm betting it's a hoax.
The rendering isn't entirely inspiring.

I do not believe it's a hoax for the fact that it's listed on DMC's website and they have their own mailing list for project updates. Do I see this actually happening? I'm not sure, it would take an awful of money and propose a great deal of risk to buy an entire production facility and not even know what your sales figures will look like. I still commend them for giving us some hope and trying to carry on Mr. Delorean's dream of building his own car company. Granted these wouldn't exactly be original cars, it is a step in the right direction.
I hope we can look past the mistakes of a man desperate to see his dream come a reality. Has he not already suffered enough for his actions. He lost his dream and his credibility and he worked hard since to rebuild his life. The sad part is he was working up plans for a new car which were never completed before he passed away. I honestly would have been honored to have met the man and I hope this new company succeeds and realizes the dream he was not able to fulfill himself.

In the end, perhaps his major crime was mostly...hubris. He thought he could build a profitable carmaking business, but stumbled, and fell. God knows he had enough experience and connections to get the job done, but the task was very large.
He should be remembered not for his unfortunate swan song, but for the spectacular career that preceded it.

The Solstice convertible on it's own is meh, the Solstice with a HAHN turbo kit and slammed on coilovers makes my naughty bits tingle!
It's sad to see only 1200 coupes made it into production. The coupe is one of the most fantastic looking cars GM has released in years.
If it has gullwing doors, I'm all over it.

I'd be pretty surprised if they wound up making the body stainless steel. For one, it would add a lot of weight, which would detract from the handling and performance. Second, it would require a whole new parts supplier where the original composite parts can already be sourced and probably already have a significant stockpile... It wouldn't really make sense to skin it in stainless, that was an 80's novelty that they'd be foolish to try and continue into the 21st century...

Good point. That feature may not make it into production. Early concepts are also "test shots" to not only publicize the new idea, but also to gather feedback prior to committing on certain details.
