My buddy is looking at getting a used car And he's wondering about Hyundai. He found an 03 sonata 6cyl 89k for $3500, and an 02 elantra gt 80k for $3900. They both are in good shape. Any info or experiences with these two cars?

i have an 04 sonata with 101,000 miles. nothing but scheduled maint.
I used to have a 2003 Elantra until someone rear ended my ex wife while she was driving it. I had some problems with the power locks at about 70k miles, but no other major problems.

He likes the elantra gt (leather and 4 wheel disc brakes) but the sonata is way roomier. I guess it doesn't matter

My dad drove from Chicago to Mexico and back 5 times in his Elantra. Great car.
dad has an 05 elantra gt.
bought as a salvage title,
then got it in an accident again.
has a complete new front end,
complete rear end. original engine.
only has 34,000 on it tho...bought it with only 9,000
only costed $3,000. besides it being accident attractive.
great car. good power, no mechanical problems.
does the gt have the 2.7 v6?
No only4 cyl

I'm not exactly sure if this helps at all, but I had a '00 elantra and got t-boned in the driver side by a F-150 that was doin' 60+ and I walked away.
The only big difference between the GT and the GLS is the fact that the GT has a slightly stiffer suspension, and has the 4 wheel disc brakes. There are cosmetic differences, and some extra options available on the GT, but they use the same engine.
