What to do....
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 7:04 PM
Ok, so I am reaching a bit of a question about what do to now...

I currently own a 98 Subaru Legacy

- Station Wagon
- GT model 2.5l motor
- Automatic
- Both fenders pretty damaged.
- Drivers side doors are pretty beat down
- Couple of blown speakers
- Moonroof doesn't open (needs switch)
- Rear pass. window doesn't open/close (needs another switch)
- Oil leaking/burning
- Rear rim has a slow leak

So, I am trying to debate on what to do here. The oil leak/burn can be addressed with a trip to the shop. Which I don't really wanna pay for again. The switches aren't a big concern. The leaks are annoying, but nothing that keeping an eye on it can't handle.

Basically, what I am looking for, is a car that meets the following criteria:

- 5spd
- Moddable
- Body style doesn't matter too much, prefer a smaller car though
- Realiable. Something that doesn't need to be in a shop all the time
- Not too bad to insure.
- AWD prefered. Need something to drive in the snow
- Around $1500-2000 TOPS (could be more, depending on what I get for my car).

So, what say you .Org?

Rofl.... STi swap? Dude, that's an easy $7k, if not MORE. Plus, I would have NO car while that gets completed.

But believe me, the idea was tossed around in my head.

Try finding an AWD DSM. The early-mid nineties models are going for the price range you're looking for, plus they have an assload of potential.

^ usually the ones in his price range are beat to hell though.

what about a jeep cherokee? the 4.0l is pretty bulletproof, easy as hell to work on, and can be had pretty cheap.

DSM's are not reliable, not cheap to insure, and although they can be had fairly cheap....those ones are more often than not beat to hell as previously stated.

You could probably look for a Celica All Trac, and even though this is a DSM....the Galant VR4...thats about all I've got. It is pretty hard to find what you are looking for in the 1,000-2,000$ range

Well, I don't know how stuck you are on AWD, but good snow tires on a FWD will not leave you disappointed in the snow. That will open up your possibilities in your price range dramatically. Obviously there are plenty of Jbodies in that price range, there are EG civics, integras, FWD dsms, ect.

Bottom line, a car in the 1500-2000 price range is not going to be totally reliable because its either going to come with some damage or high miles (read as >100k )

AWD isn't a necessaity at all.

Yea, WRX isn't cheap to insure either.

And, some other ideas are rattling around in my head, which can increase the cash. Such as, fixing the oil issue with the wagon, and selling it. Should get me closer to $4k.

And finally, no way in hell would i get a DSM.

id sell it and find a better condition sub...the awd is nice and they run forever if you take care of them.

My gf's actually considering trading her civic for a subaru.
