Seriously, show of hands. Who here wouldn't at least entertain the notion of buying a Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger/Challenger with a 215hp 3.0 Diesel engine if it gave you a 29mpg average with 22mpg city and 36mpg highway?
I mean Jesus, that's almost as good (off by 1mpg) as a Cobalt XFE. It's the same average as a Maliby Hybrid.
I've often defended car companies of incomptence, but sometimes I'll see something like this and it'll piss me off.

I got 19.6 avg. on a round trip to Nashville and back,highway and around town for 2 days,total of 1987mi. in my '07.5 Duramax 3/4 ton 4x4 crew cab. And avg. 14.1towing the enclosed trailer and Sunfire to the Bash and back. (All that with the a/c blowing the whole time) People just can't justify the extra $5500 or so up front for the diesel option.

But you have a good point about the cost of a diesel engine option. Though I'd buy a diesel long long long before one of the current crop of hybrids that have just as big of a premium over the base model and have mechanical components that even NASA scientists think are "too complicated".
Because they must. They prbly don't have the hemi or more go i would guess....

I have asked myself this question before, why wont american car companies give us the option of a diesel?
because American car companies gave diesel a bad name in America which the horrible gas engines converted to run on diesel that they decided to make back in the day, common sense would tell you an engine deesigned with gasoline in mind is not gonna like the ridiculously high compression it takes to run off diesel and the engine would stay together. Obviously that's not the case anymore but it left a bad impression about diesels. Fast forward to recent memory and you have a reliable diesel but its loud as hell, it stinks, its blows black smoke out everywhere you go etc..
US consumers haven't realized how good the current clean diesels are. No smoke, very low emissions, not really louder then a typical gas engine, and ridiculous gas mileage.
Personally if I were to buy another car right now (despite how much I HATE VW's) I would buy a new Jetta Sport Wagen TDI
As for the original question... I wouldn't want a 300 or a charger etc regardless, if they did it with a Magnum I would consider the possibility.
I wouldn't consider that car specifically, but if a small car with a diesel of that power rating came around...maybe.
I'd love to see gasoline direct injection developed more thoroughly. IF i could keep my foot out of my solstic GXP (impossible i know), i would get 40mpg highway. I get 28-30 mixed driving as it is. Thats in a 2900lb roadster with 24lb/corner 18" wheels, 245 series tires and shatty aerodynamics.
Now I'd like to see a higher compresson N/A 2.0 SIDI eco in a small car platform with a six speed manual and some of those "low rolling reistance tirese" on the cobalt XFE. Say hellow to consistent 40mpg and probably about 180-200 hp.
imo, diesel is the way to go. at least in my area, its $0.10 cheaper than 87 octane. plus they're more fuel efficient, and engine life is usually much longer than a typical gas engine.

the better question is not why does Europe get a diesel version of this car, but why does anyone want that car in the first place or anything built on that platform
