Sweet98 gets a makeover
Thursday, June 25, 2009 5:08 PM
I picked this car up last fall and have been slowly bringing it back to life. This was my favorite grand am when a previous owner had it so when the opportunity came up to purchase it, I jumped on the opportunity. This will be a progress thread so keep checking back for updates. I need to snap some more recent pics when I get back into town. Hope you guys like it so far...

pics of what it looked like when I brought it home:

I rewired the entire car to a 2000 cavalier for tuning purposes. This will allow me to run the GM supercharger flash on the computer with my 2 bar map sensor. I decided to sound dampen the car while I had everything out. These pics are from a couple months ago:

And a couple of the motor that is going in. I also have a NVG-550 transmission with a team green lsd insert to replace the isuzu trans.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! They keep me going haha. Here are a couple more

I sprayed the engine bay and wheel wells with chassis saver paint from Magnetic paints. It is very similar to POR-15 but supposedly works better. The paint is resistant to scratching and liquids like oil, gasoline, and other lubricants while it prevents rust from spreading. It is a pretty cool product and not too expensive.

who needs abs??? not me!

I had to modify the dash a bit to fit the 2000+ Sunfire gauge cluster. The GA and sunfire clusters are very close to being the same minus the size difference between the two, mounting points, and wiring. General shape is the same though.

updates:

I broke the engine down b/c I thought I had spun a bearing but it turned out to be normal startup after an engine rebuild. I have to install arp studs and headbolts anyways and I want to do the 2.3 oil pump swap so I doubt the car will be back together this summer unless I hit the lottery.

Today was a pretty sad day. I sent my first baby to the bone yard. I have owned this car since I was 17 and I had been through alot with it but it's time for a change and I think this was the right move.

Some good work going on.
Question though. Since the gauge cluster you put in is a 2000+. Wint it be looking for a signal from a BCM? I KNOW your car doesnt have one of those
Either way, keep working at it.

you are right, thats why I stripped a 2000 cavalier of it's wiring and re-wired the grand am to a Jbody haha. This way I can run the GM supercharger reflash as a base tune to work with.

Well, I guess I should update this for you guys. I just got the panels back from paint and they look awesome thanks to my buddy Matt. He had to rebuild a few corners on the side skirts and door panels due to cracks in the gelcoat and fiberglass. Everything is reinforced now so I am pretty happy with everything.

My only only gripe here (seriously..nice f-ing work) is the series tires. They're just too small. looks wrong on the car.
