General Motors Statement Regarding Discontinuation of Pontiac Vibe Production at NUMMI Facility
Attributable to Troy Clarke, President, General Motors North America
As part of its long-term viability plan and recent decision to phase out the Pontiac brand, General Motors has decided to discontinue production of the Pontiac Vibe by the end of August 2009. The Vibe is produced at the New United Motor Manufacturing Incorporated (NUMMI) facility jointly operated by GM and Toyota in Fremont, California. While no replacement for Vibe production has been determined, GM and Toyota remain in active discussions regarding potential future production at NUMMI.

Damn. That was one of the only mainstream GM cars that I actually liked. I wouldn't have expected that model on the chopping block.

Why not rebadge it as a Chevy? I think it would sell well.

Guess my mom and I got our '09 GTs just in time.
No surprise really. If they're phasing out, it's got to happen some day!
good riddance. When compared to the competitors the vibe was terrible. Looked terrible too.
Not sure why, but i was under the impression this was to be the last car to be axed. I take it then the G6 will be the last car standing then?

Not a shocker at all. GM reduced Pontiac to a pathetic rebadge nameplate years ago. As much as I'm sad to see them go, it was worse to watch Pontiac get bastardized into what it became.
That car is garbage, and a small example of what GM did to poor Pontiac.

Do a google search for Toyota Paint Problems. The Vibe shares the same crappy paint.
Toyota demands top dollar for their economy cars with their over-rated reputations, but I would rather have a lowly Cobalt or G5 with GM incentives. You get above average reliablity, esp. the powertrains, and decent paint for thousands less.

Must be base models. The GTs are a million times better in every way guaranteed.

Personally I couldn't be any happier with my '09 Vibe GT. In my opinion it rides, drives, handles and looks great. The quality is great in my opinion as well. It is so nice to not have to "fall down" to get into my vehicle like I did in the Sunfires. I just slide right in and out. Don't get me wrong, I miss my Sunfires but it's so nice being able to haul a bunch of stuff or have three other adults ride in comfort with me. As far as the price and all, I think it is the best all around deal in the Pontiac family considering it comes standard with pretty much everything.
As far as the paint problems go, just like anything else if you maintain the exterior of the vehicle you won't have any problems. I have had mine for 2.5 months and I have zero scratches, chips, etc. because I wash and wax it on a regular basis. If you are someone who never washes and/or waxes your car, than yes, your paint will look like $hit, but that is with any vehicle.

He guarantee's it!!!!!! Trying to feel better about buying a Vibe?!
Buddy of mine has a Matrix, and the motor sounds terrible to me, like a noisy diesel. Toyota told him it was normal. There was a time I had a lot of respect for Toyota, but that was back in the 22R and 3TC days. I know at least in some of the Corollas the transmission had both ATF AND gear oil for the differential, and I know of a lot of those transmissions biting the dust because of people only checking ATF on the dipstick. Then another Corolla transmission had problems with cracked housings. I agree with Zora, much rather have a Cobalt over anything entry level from Toyota.
toyota has been garbage since the supra and sc300/soarer days. nothing good has come from them since.

I never drove the "new" Vibe but I couldnt stand the "old" ones. Even the GT was a turd to drive.

The Pontiac dealer I worked at would have Vibes sitting on the lot for over a year. They didnt sell very good around here.
I find it very sad the last ever Pontiac to roll off the line is a toyota, and the best & fastest pontiac ever built was Austrailian. and the the only two regular Pontiacs were re-bodied opels, and the compact was korean. Shame on the U.S., why can't we engineer, and build our own great cars. Shame on GM they stopped building excitment years ago, and let other people build it for them.....THAT'S why Pontiac died.

^^^ Maybe because GM's focus was on big gawdy trucks and suvs.

First off, I'm a girl. Second off, buying my Vibe GT was the best thing I have ever done. I am no longer dumping endless amounts of money into a car only to get nothing in return.
As far as the GTs being better than the base models, talk to Mr. Goodwrench about that. He knows all the specifics on how the suspension and other things on them differ.
I could give two $hits what anyone thinks about the Vibe. I couldn't be happier with it and that's what matters to me. I'm not out to impress anyone.
