Hertz Corvette ZHZ - anyone rent one before?
Tuesday, March 03, 2009 2:18 PM
I went home on vacation on L.A. for the week and the (deal broker) website i used to reseve my rental car at hertz screwed up my reservation. Basically i didn't have a rental car, so i jokingly said..ok then to make it up to me give me a Bentley GT.
The lady chuckled, i laughed to...like i could afford that daily fee.
So i said no, i'll take the vette then we both laughed, why? because i was renting an Aveo for $20.00 a day. so obviously the Bentley and Vette were out of what i wanted to spend.

She does some looking around on their system and then asks if i'd be willing to accept an upgrade to make up for the confusion and mess the 3rd party site i booked with caused. She said it would cost me just another $20 total making my total rental car bill for the 4 days like $122.00. I was like yeah that's not a problem . so she gotme all signed up and told me my car is in slot 8, enjoy my vacation.

I get to slot 8 and this is waiting for me....

....Uhhhhh, that's not an Aveo or Cobalt. I checked the plates and sure enough that's my rental car. So I drove this thing and to be honest it was a very fun car. Hot looking car too. But i was severely disappointed in the fit and finish, and the handling of the car was just sloppy. The car bucked over any little bump or VERY minor imperfection in the road. at freeway speeds the rear wheels would loose contact with the road for a split second and just did not instil alot of confidence. The roof, dash, and a few mystery spots in the car rattled and squeaked all the time..at times it was hard to have a conversation with the roof panel on at all.
thankfully i had it off the entire time i was there.
The only time i ever really got on it was on a freeway chase with a douche in a G37. I spanked him with out a sweat, but at one point i hit a small..very, very small pot hole and the cars rear wheels lost contact and the car felt uneasy, dare i say it got a wee bit side ways. I know how to drive so i kept it together but a serious $60,000+ sports car should not make you nervuos to drive it fast. This car didn't seem very sure footed so i never really abused it or got on it much. For fear of the hit on my insurance or myself if i wrecked it.

I just got me thinking a C6 is like $63,000+ brand new, i've driven a lot of $60,000+ cars in my time and they all felt like a $60,000+ car should. solid, confident handling,no squeaks. Are all vettes this "clunky"? or is the Hertz ZHZ just a stripped down rental fleet Vette so therefore not a shining example of what a Corvette is like. quality wise, It felt like a nuclear powered Cavalier to me...fast, but cheaply made.

I did love it though and it was a very cool way to cruise around Los Angeles. I loved it and hated it at the same time, the MPG's were actually pretty darn good too, But this car has made me think a vette is a great car to rent but i wouldn't want to buy one. I would totally rent it again it was a lot of fun otherwise and pretty badass looking. My buddies 7 year old son thought i was driving Bumble Bee...LOL

Any Corvette owners on here drive one? thoughts?
Anybody at all rent one? thoughts?
anybody drive the new vettes think i described it accurately? Because i want to believe this is not how all Vettes are.

Being a rental it very well could have been ragged out alot before, but I do remember hearing reviews where the Z06 platform is sketchy.

Not really the review I expected from a corvette.. Rattling and squeeky interior? I suppose it could be possible, it is a GM afterall lol. I find it funny that you can rent a Corvette too.. I guess that's why we need GM alive.. Someones gotta make those rental cars haha.

I've never been in a C6, but I have nothing but great reviews for the C5 platform... I find it hard to believe C6 could be so much worse...

No. Not a fleet queen, and Ford also had a Mustang GT Hertz edition. Nothing new.

My guess it that corners were cut for fleet sales. I have never seen those rims on a stock corvette.

A 2009 C6 starts for $50K not $63K. When I had c5 ZO6 the ride was indeed stiff, my car was used, but there were squeaks from the leather seats (I hate leather seats). Engine note was indeed loud, but I didn't mind.
Now I have driven the C6, C6 ZO6, pre-production C6 ZR1. All had much improved fit-finish especially the ZR1 with optional leather dash and door panel. Now the rear suspension on the ZO6s have improved over my C5 ZO6 you can tell the rear shocks improved. The ZR1's ride matches a GT car while perform like a supercar.
The only thing I can say GM should improve on the interior is more interior colors and tones. That alone improves the "perceptions" on the interior when consumers instantly compare with its competitions.

If you ever go to Europe rent a German car like Benz, BMW, Audi (commuter cars for the rest of the world) and you'll see they don't survive rental abuse to well either.

Neither has anyone else, but they were in fact stock wheels for the ZHZ model. I actually really liked them. And most of my friends thought those rims looked cool with the car. They must be special factory wheels for this car only, because they have genuine corvette race flag logos on the center caps.

But yeah it was a fun car to drive for 4 days on vacation, but i wouldn't want to own one.
