'99 Alero Help
Sunday, February 15, 2009 1:44 PM
My mom's Alero is having issues. It was making a horrid grinding/scraping noise, so I popped the hood and looked. The A/C compressor pulley is being dumb.

On the pulley, there is a metal circle that sits on the outside of the pulley. I don't know what it's for, but it is bolted to the compressor pulley with a 13mm bolt. When I spin the bolt, the metal disc looking thing spins and the pulley doesn't. When I spin the pulley, the metal thing doesn't spin. Are they supposed to spin at the same time?

I want to be sure I'm doing the right thing before trying anything.

I should probably mention that I can see little metal shavings between the two parts.

That's what happened to mine, just before it died. I just squirted grease in there. I'm not sure what's up with it.

Come to Aleromod.

Before the a/c compressor died?

I just realized that metal disc thing is the a/c clutch.

I just looked up information on A/C compressors and found that out too.

It's touching the pulley somewhat when it's not supposed to be engaged, so it's scraping against it. That's what happened to mine... which is why it would make noise until I turned on the A/C (when it's firmly against the pulley) and then sometimes scrape with the A/C off. Then it just wouldn't clutch at all. I need to remove the clutch I guess since my A/C's been dead and I don't care about it, that way it'd ensure it's not making drag on the engine.

I'm going to go take my clutch off and leave it that way.

What you can do on yours I'd assume is remove the clutch to check its condition and the condition of the bearings on it and replace as necessary.

ac clutch is shot.

should turn it on every so often in the winter as to not wear it out anyway. it's good for the full system. prevents it from doing the grind.

just one thing, take the control arms off before getting rid of it if you do. aluminum control arms FTW.

The clutch was rubbing against the pulley. It's missing a rivet.

It ran until the clutch was ground down. lol It's fine now.

Future reference though, how do I get the clutch off? Is it that singular bolt, or do I need a puller of some sort?

seems like it's just one bolt. you just have to use a tool or "the" tool to hold the clutch in place since it spins independently from the accessory pulley.

My friend got back to me when I mentioned I intended on removing mine, and he says we need the clutch remover tool.
