So, I am selling the 2k2 (Insurance reasons), and I am getting myself into something a little different... GP-GTP. I am exclusively looking at the 4 door models (insurance reasons), and beleive it or not, it costs 120 $ less a month to drive one over a Z........ SO really All I want to know are known issues to look for (I know about the manifold leaks and such), and what ever else to worry about, Reviews on the cars from any owners... SO far my impressions of the car is favorable, I drove one an loved the room inside it, the seats felt great, the Interior didn't even feel as cheap as most GM's(Except for the god ugly Bronze/Tan ones..) of the generation as well.
So lets hear it !

Friend of mine owns one, its a nice car, comfortable, moves around really well. My only complaint is the size of the car....

theyre great cars, my dad has an 04 GTP and i absolutely love it. very quick, great ride quality, and they can be had for very good prices.
his only complaint about it is that it doesn't get as good of gas mileage as it should. he says he gets about 23-25 mpg highway.
what years are you looking at specifically?
Check out my build thread!
Look into buying an '05. They have the newer gen blowers that are more efficient. Do not go from an 06 and up. The PCM is not tuneable. They are relatively cheap, VERY easy to modify, and from the experience with my 06 normal GP, I really like the design of the car. They seem to last a pretty long time. I wish I had gotten a GTP, there aren't many options for the NA cars : /
check out www.grandprixforums.net if you want to read up on it.
I have a 00 Grand Prix GTP. The insurance for it is only about $50 less a year than my 02 Sunfire. According to my computer, i am getting 17mpg. Considering I get about 22mpg with my Sunfire, its not bad. I got the dreaded abs trac light like everyone else. I will get around to having it checked one of these days.

I don't mind the 03 and older ones. They are definately good value for the money with the amount of power you get. I haven't heard of any major issues either.
The 04 and up has a really bad interior....
intake gaskets suck , GM updated them to a aluminum gasket with the silicone embeded to seal the ports
trans can be weak when pushed alot
^what he said on the trans. but have seen 200k plus miles on a modified gtp w/ still no problems.
other wise i have a 98 gtp and cant complain really at all. for being 11 years old. has only stranded me once.
plus side is easily modifiable, and cheap!

ive got 2 of them 97 & 98 , 98's trans is shot but it was heavily modded ran mid to low 13's , and the 97 trans is a little weak has just over 100k on it , but it also sat alot from the previous owner it was a 10th car for him
they are great cars , other than the 97's a/c compressor exploding , and the 98's a/c hose blowing apart , they both have been great cars , since GM killed the G8ST looks like the 97 will stay around longer , might sell the 98 and get a vega
I was particular looking @ a 97-03 generation.. MY only worry is the intake gasket as said above really.. hmmm I have looked at a couple, both really impressed me thus far. One had about 180km (not miles !) AND the thing was a champ, I also went and tried out one with higher mileage, and it to was great, for a car with 270km.. I was totally impressed.

My 12 year old GTP still runs like a champ. No major problems of any kind in my ownership, and the thing still cranks out 35mpg on the highway. I can't see a single reason not to keep driving it now.

preety fun cars i wanted one but the prices were up there so i got a 3400 impala.the 3800 is a weird motr.only certain people can build em and still have reliability.seems to take the special touch
^i'd take a 3800 over a 3400 anyday! 3800's are pretty damn strong.

intake gaskets are a easy change , so not a big worry , just a expected issue
well, not that there hasnt been enough praise about them, but i've got nothing but good words about GP's, especially GTPs. my low 13 second car has around 131K miles on it, and runs like a friggin champ. cam intake exhaust pulley and some tuning and it still gets over 16mpg in town, and i pulled 30 on the last highway trip. amazing cars that will last forever as long as you treat them right. they're right, there are a select few people who can actually build 3800s. but why bother? stock bottom ends on these things can push 600 horse to the ground.

it's not how fast you go, it's how you get there that counts.
