Thoughts on buying a 2000 mustang gt?
Tuesday, February 03, 2009 5:28 PM
I have read a ton of these types of posts and now it's time for me to make one.

I don't know much about Mustangs specifically, but I am a tech so I am pretty knowledgeable.

I found a 2000 GT, black with 87k miles, mach sound, 5 speed, for $8,995.

The only thing i noticed when I drove it, was the clutch was letting out way at the top and the guy said they would put a clutch in.

Are there any common problems I should know of?

Here's a link to the car

Thanks!

I'd go with a firebird formula, you can find one for the same price and year. I've seen a few 00-01 formulas sell in my area for 6-7k with that same mileage.

Personally, I just can't get into Mustangs...

But, I had the chance to drive my buddies 04 GT, and aside from the lack-of-being-able-to-dash-stroke looks, it was not a bad car. Great performer and all for the straight line out of the box.

Yes that actually is a common problem. My brother just bought great condition a bone stock silver 2000 Mustang GT 5spd with 107,000miles leather interior, mach sound system for $6,700 His clutch lets out all the way at the top which prolly means it is well worn however it did not slip any so I told him just drive it till it slips then replace it. I like them and can't think of any reason you should be leary of getting one. It is one of the easiest cars I have ever done an oil change on too.

Do it, there great cars.

Also, check the clutch quadrant and cable, the quadrant is plastic and garbage and after a while it doesn't self adjust properly(take a look at this thread regarding adjust the travel, it may just need to be adjusted if its not slipping http://mustangforums.com/forum/4-6l-general-discussion/448702-how-to-really-adjust-your-clutch-w-out-an-adjuster.html) so that might explain the clutch issues. Getting a good firewall adjustable unit is cheap or even a king cobra clutch is cheap if it comes to that.

Trouble areas on that model year are:
-plastic intake crossover is prone to crack, getting the 01+ aluminum unit costs about $150 and is around 4 hours to install
-99/2000's have the T45 tranny which isn't terrible, but the 01+ has a 3650 Tremec unit that holds more abuse
-99/2000's have the split headunit mach setup, adding a HU to that stereo requires a bunch of harnesses and adaptors unless you bypass the factory amps , which sucks

Mustangs are cheap to mod, sound realllllllllly good, and IMO look stunning with only a few visual adjustments.

Although I'm obligated to tell you...................

'mustangs are lame' seems to be the new 'buy an ls1' ..........

Anyways, I am a fan of the mach1, very nice cars!

Lots of good info here, I knew I could count on the JBO!

I was wondering why the clutch was so heavy lol I didn't think modern cars came with cable clutches.
It didn't slip at all, but maybe I could still talk the guy into putting a new clutch in instead of adjusting it.

So it has a T45 trans huh? My old '88 turbo T-bird has a T5 world class, is the T45 weaker than the T5?
I really don't plan on many mods. I think it would be fast enough for me, but we all know how that goes...

I thought I read somewhere that the plastic intake issue was a free recall due to losing heat and not being able to
defrost your windshield?

As for the split head unit, I don't plan on any audio stuff, but that's good to know.

The only thing I don't like is the interior, which looks and feels very cheap.

Thanks a lot guys i really appreciate the responses, I think if I can get the clutch the way I like it I will buy it!

The leather seats makes all the difference in the interior feel/look of the car. I too felt the same way about the cloth interior when I saw pics of the car you are looking at.

Im a mustang fan. I would recomend looking for a 96-98 Cobra the SN95 body style. Remember its a mustang there are tons of parts if something goes wrong.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Be happy it doesnt have stock leather, its prone to cracking. Better off getting some Katzkins or aftermarket seats. I unno about the crossover being covered, I doubt they'd honor warranty at this point, just check to see if its already had the fix.

Looks like that car has some Eagle GS D3 tires and billet pedals, interesting, might have an exhaust too.

So I bought the car, and I love it!

They put a new clutch in. It drives perfect except for the crappy ass tires which are called "Triangle Talons" lol

I traded in my '03 Cav LS and got $3,500. I got the Mustang for $8,000. As I drove the Cav to trade it in, I realized I was going to miss it......

So, on to the pics I took at work.

Nothing special, I know, all stock...

I haven't found a Mustang forum that I like, any suggestions?

Congrats on the purchase, check out

www.svtperformance.com
www.corral.net
www.stangnet.com

All of their own ups and downs but there my go to 3, besides local mustang forums.

I suggest some black housing headlights, mach 1 grill and lip, the 01+ hood scoop, relocating the spoiler to the rear of the trunk, and a good drop and wheels.

DONT get the mustang, C5 corvettes are CHEAP now.......... Just sold mine for 8k you can find them with decent miles for cheap and the LS1 will last twice as long as the V8 in the GT.

Just my opinion!!!

I really like the new stangs however....but then again the new camaro has them beat i think the v6 new camaro has close the the hp of the gt stang =/

I don't know where you get the idea that the 4.6 modular motors don't last, but they are quite stout. Maybe not as fast as a Corvette, but age to age, mileage to mileage, they are NOT in the same price bracket. And plus, he already said he bought the Mustang and is enjoying it, what is the point of people who have nothing to add to a thread about someone car except what they COULD have, or in your eyes SHOULD have gotten? Maybe there were no good priced, good condition, decent mileage 'Vettes in his area?

Now unlike a single-brand nut swinger who says something like "DONT get the Mustang" with such demand and certainty, I am NOT saying all this just because I own a Mustang. I am simply saying that the guy found a car that interested him, fit his needs and budget, and wanted opinions on it. He didn't ask anyone to tell him what he SHOULD do with his own damn money.

The 4.6 Modular is a very reliable motor. If you want to mod it, there are simple things you can do to ensure longevity in the power train. They can even get decent gas mileage if you take care on how heavy your foot is.

If you plan on modding that Mustang, there are a lot of cheap ways to make them look a ton better, and plenty of affordable performance parts depending on how crazy you want to go.

I have owned an 02 v6, and an 04 cobra...loved em both...tons of available parts, and easy easy easy to work on...ENJOY!

Not to sound like a dick, but you could have picked up a 99-01 Cobra with the same miles for the same price. But congrats on the purchase, people that hate on 'stangs don't understand the sheer fun of them!

O noes!
