hmmm....17yr old bmw that was moddifed? id pass. im sure the owner has beat on it and like mentioned, when parts start to break, it isnt going to be cheap.

how much is he asking?

Re: opinions

its only 3000 cert and etested, and every car breaks, sure these might be a bit more expensive to fix but Its worth it IMO, and previous owner is very mature so I highly doubt its been "beat" on, however I am sure that it has been driven the way it should be but not the way a young punk kid would drive it.

Rich you sound pretty made up about it already..........

BUT the 318is was a next to bottom of the barrel BMW in those days, it came with a very tired and slow 1.8/1.9 with a whopping 140hp(If I recall correctly...... 0-60 time slower then most 2.2 5 speed Cavy's of the era....

THINGS are expensive if they break, and they WILL break often on that car.

-The only Pro's I can see about it is that it is a BMW, and thus has the nice BMW interior, and creature comforts.

A wealthy friend of mine used to have an M3 and the little rod that moves the wipers back and forth broke on it. When he went to have it changed it cost 1500$ Just for the rod.

Bimmers can be very very expensive. Regular maintenance stuff like brake pads and oil/air filters aren't too dear, but God help you if you need something like an electric window motor.

For 3000$ I say buy it, enjoy the hell out of it while it lasts and once your combined repair bills total more than the price of your car, dump it. The important part is to have fun.

for 3k I would pass, that car is hella old now man. For 3k you can get something a little newer and also not have to worry about major repair costs.

Who in this thread has actually owned a BMW? Anyone?

Rich, I've owned a 97 M3, 01 330Ci and currently a 08 X5 3.3. BMW's are great cars never had any trouble with ours besides basic maintainance, and parts are not that rediculous if you know where to look. It cost me less to modd the 330ci then it did my 94 Firebird Formula. Plus part cars are plentiful cuz most owners toss those cars aside.

Check out maxbimmer.com, its canadas largest online BMW community.

I seriously say get it, throw some nice 19'' Breytons or Hamanns on it, upgrade the stereo and call it a day.

No, not trying to be anti-conformist, because in my experience, BMW's, even the old ones are reliable and great cars for the money. $3000 canadian won't get you much, I think for that price it would be a great car. Sorry, I'll never offer first hand experience ever again for risk of being "anti conformist". I'll just tell him to buy another jbody, thats what we do here right?

Also pretty sure I've seen that car in person at car shows last year, "piece o junk" is pretty far from the truth.

Short Hand, sorry your friends dad had such bad luck with his, I know my bosses husband got over 280kms trouble free on his 318 before he decided to sell, and my friend sister is still driving her 220kms 325 with nary a problem. Everyone has the idea that German cars are unreliable and costly to fix, my LT1 Firebird was more unreliable and costly to fix then any german car we've owned.

BUT statistics show, THAT they are unreliable, and that they do break. BUT like anything, there are exceptions to the rules, and you are clearly one of them.
