GM unveils plan to congress
Wednesday, December 03, 2008 3:01 PM
This is official, GM's plan for future survival that it unveiled to Congress:

Focus on "core brands": Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac
Launch predominately high mileage, energy-efficient cars and crossovers
Sell Saab, HUMMER
Sell or kill Saturn
Reduce Pontiac to a "niche" brand
Trim dealerships from 6,450 to 4,700
Reopen talks with UAW to cut manufacturing costs further
Reduce total workforce from 96,000 to 65-75,000
Negotiate with lenders, remove $35.6 billion in debt

So there ya go. GM of the Future.

Anyone else reading between the lines that Pontiac becoming a "niche" brand is basically either a) A first step towards eliminating the brand altogether or b) transforming it into the new Saturn, a brand to sell Opels and Vauxhalls through.

Sad to see the greats fall though. Deserved as that may be.

A lot of things have lead up to this becoming a reality. One of teh biggest is the sudden shift in customer demands and customers turning their backs to GM.

I'm a little pissed off that I've heard all of those before we even had this crisis. So essentially, they came up with nothing. Don't give them any money.

Maybe we'll see something groundbreaking! By the looks of that list that GM came up with for changes, it almost looks like they came to the .org and found that thread we had about what GM has to change.

3 Pontiacs in my driveway.... and I'll never buy a Buick.

Great move. Real great move.

The only brand they had with ANY kind of design sense that wasn't bland and tupper-ware like and they shrink it to zip. Brilliant move.

they are keeping buick because they are making a killing with them in china.
im sure GMC will be kept for commercial fleet production only.
im glad to see what will happen to Pontiac. maybe it will finally be turned into what was truly meant to be...
Pontiac was always meant to be a performance brand with unique cars in the gm line up rather then half of them being rebadged chevys
ive always thought of Saturn as pointless.
the plan sounds about right to me, however i still think GM is royal screwed

PLEASE DONT KILL PONTIAC! i love my sunfire and i like the newer pontiacs (g5, g6, g8, soltice, etc).

You don't need Buick and Cadillac (I think they're only keeping the name because it sells well in China).
Personally, I'd ditch Buick, and keep Saturn to compete with Scion (small fuel-efficient cars).

I would move the Enclave to the Chevy lineup (ditch the cheaper Chevy version).
I would move the Pontiac G8, Solstice, and Vibe to the Chevy lineup as well (ditch the Impala).
I would take the hummer brand, and catapult it into the sun.
I would move all trucks and commercial vans out of Chevrolet to GMC.

The reason GM can't just shut down unnecessary and redundant brands.

Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in
America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the
country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along,
whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist
dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the
leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and
denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the
same in any country. - Hermann Goring

don't have to shut them down completely, but it would be hard to sell a whole lot filled with magenta pursuits.

keep a pontiac model and one only for them to sell, a magenta pursuit would be sweet eh. or the dealers and manufacturers can try to work together, either way everyone involved has to give for any of them to get in the future.

GM and Holden (which, is a GM owned company) have a specific deal to use their designs in the US for a limited time. Hence why the GTO was only around for a few years, and the G8 will be suffering a similar fate. 1 generation of the G8, and its gone. And actually, that makes me kinda sad to see, since Holden builds some beautiful cars.

But, here is my total plan for the Big 3, as I posted somewhere else.

ersonally, I would not want either of the big 3 to go down, for various reasons. Ive been looking a lot at what GM in particular should do, and here would be my plan as follows for the brands

Chevy - Keep it to entry level cars/light trucks. Stuff like the Cobalt, Silverado, and Malibu should stay. Camaro can stay.
Ponatic - Make this the "fun" division. Sporty FWD, AWD, and RWD drive cars. Elimate the Cobalt SS, move it to the G5 GXP. Move the Solistace out, and use only the Sky. Keep redline variant. GTO stays, as does G8 sedan.
Buick - GTFO. Its all duplicates from other GM brands. Let it be in China though, they love it there.
Hummer - Sell it, or dump it. No need for any of these things to be on the road any more.
Saab - Sell it, or do a better job of branding the car. Prefer sell it though
Saturn - Make it the Opel for the USA. I don't care if they kill Saturn, and bring Opel here as a whole, that works for me too.
GMC - Trucks and fleet vans. That is all.
Corvette - Give it its own brand.
Caddy - Keep it as the luxury brand. Continue the variants for CTS, STS, and Esclade (face it, it sells well). Get rid of the EXT version though.

Also, random note, continue GMPP program for sporty cars as well.

Ford would be a little different:

Ford - Keep as is really. Not a whole lot to change here. Kill Mustang variants but base, GT, and maybe 1 level above the GT (something to compete with the ZR-1)
Volvo - Brand it better, European styling is damn amazing.
Mazda - The fun brand. Again, sporty type cars. RX-8, Miata, MazdaSpeed projects are all staying. Everything else, GTFO.
Lincoln - Luxury brand. Give them some sport-luxury cars if needed (Think Mustang GT, but slightly better styling, and better interior)

Continue Ford Racing program, as well as MazdaSpeed. Or, bring them together, and give it a new name.

And finally, the company that is in the biggest crap-hole, Chrysler.

Chrysler - Entry to mid-level cars. Kill 300c, move to a more luxury brand image
Dodge - Again, fun, performance orianted cars.
Jeep - Leave nameplate, but get rid of Patriot and Liberty. These are the bastard children of the company

Performance should stay under Mopar, but also start using factory accessories for lifting Jeeps, and parts for light off-road use. If they are willing to factory support a 400hp Neon, why not a 3" lifted jeep?

Other then that, I've got nothing.

Why they decided to keep Buick and GMC is beyond me. Buick hasn't made anything worthwile since the Turbo Regals of the 80's and GMC is just a copy of Chevy trucks and suv's. "Let's keep GMC even though americans aren't buying trucks and SUV's" Dump Buick and GMC for Saturn and Pontiac. Turn Pontiac into a niche performance brand and turn Saturn into a 'green' brand. Hummer keep and add a bunch of hybrid models to change thier image.

GM doesn't make any cars that interest me. Our next cars will be a Subaru and either a Mini or a Mazda.

GMC do very well with their commercial vehicles and Buicks sells like hot cakes in china... thus why they are keeping them both
i think it would be wise to kill the consumer line up of GMC vehicles. as well as kill Buick in the states as its an unneeded brand here with Cadillac being around.
GM already killed their chances of turning Saturn into a "green" brand years ago.
there is no need for Hummer... at all

Buick could replace Pontiac if you think about. For one thing, when's the last time that Pontiac truly has lived up to the "excitement" division? Everything it's ever offered in the last twenty years with the sole exception of the Fiero, new GTO, G6 convertible and G8 has also been offered by either Chevy or Buick (Hell, an argument could be made that the G8 is just a Cadillac CTS wannabe). I love Poncho's, but they long stopped being genuinely unique a long time ago.

Most twentysomethings today don't remember the original GTO and the new one never did get much of a reputation, but they do remember the legendary Grand National. See where this could be going? GM is trying to get away from V8s and into boosted V6s, so what better to this than with the GN or GNX? It'd bring back a nameplate that kids today know and at the same time allow GM to hit their CAFE goals. Ten bucks says they bring back the Syclone or Typhoon too. Hell, I'm surprised they haven't already.
