whats the most you can do to a 3400 without having to tune.like i can upgrade rods and such but what about upping compression or nitrous.i want to start modding my impala.but am wonmdering how far i can go before tuning
intake and exhaust is about it. Cam or higher compression is pretty stupid to go through all the work if you're not going to tune for it. Rods are good to 500ish horsepower, really no point in replacing them, just replace the bolts with ARP. I'm pretty sure the Impala's actually have decent tuning support out there, either HPT or someone else- plus they're MAF cars which makes tuning for NA a lot easier. But 60degreev6.com would be the place to go for all the details.
BTW older camaro 3.4 liter pistons are good for like 11.8ish:1 compression in the 3400. 3.4 DOHC pistons are in the neighborhood of 12.5:1. Either can be had relatively cheap. But again, if you don't want to tune, you're never going to see gains that will make cracking the engine open worth the effort. Modding and not tuning is like building a computer with all the latest technology and trying to run it with Windows 3.1. Why?
