I'm suprised nobody picked up on this yet.....
In the latest issue of Road & Track They did a turbo car shootout between the 2009 WRX, Lancer Ralliart, Mazda Speed3, and Cobalt SS-T. And the Cobalt SS-T owned all, the testers were genuinely shocked at how good the car was. It beat out 3 time winner the Mazda Speed3. As it was quoted from the article ..."it didn't just win [the shootout], it dominated the others."...
A Time For Turbos
Their only gripe was the interior was plasticy...of course...but otherwise they praised the car like the second coming. About time they gave a domestic a fair shake instead of automatically dismissing it as not worthy.

Impressive! I like the turbo cobalts, they're pretty badass.

Just a Pinto? I thought they transformed into 2 Chevettes dressed as robot ninjas. Yeah i read this article and was like WOW! I guess GM got sick of getting laughed at. But the reality is, is this to little, to late? Next year the Camaro RS is released in the same exact price range w/300hp V6, similar mpg's & RWD.

no Jooky, I think it would be TOO little TOO late.

As much as I absolutely love the new Camaro the non SS model isn't even in the same ballpark as far as performance as the 09 SS Balt...
Handling, nope
MPG, nope
Straight line speed, nope
Aftermarket, nope
Weight, almost 1000lbs difference so nope
Styling yes the Camaro has pretty much everything else out there beat, but not everyone gets a car for looks, practicality has a bigger impact.
Not everyone sees RWD as a benefit either if your anyplace that it snows and its your daily driver. It doesn't really matter though because theres always going to be rednecks out there that think high 13s-14s out of a 300hp is king@!#$. I don't share that opinion being 13 sec 4s are pretty commonplace these days. There doesnt seem to be much point in getting a V6 or a V8 if they can't do at least low 13s off the showroom floor, if performance is the sole reason your basing your purchase on.
For example the current Mustang GT for 28k you get a 300hp V8, high 13s, subpar handling, respectable braking, excellent styling, pretty decent reliability. Theres at least 4-5 4cylinder cars that deliver a higher level of performance with better gas mileage with AWD or FWD which is far better for a daily driver.
Mazdaspeed 3
Cobalt SS
WRX
Lancer Ralliart
Just to name a few I'm sure theres more

They actually always did, difference is, it is now some domestics are actually competitive.
When I drove this car almost 1 year ago, the first thing I said... "Yep, it is much better."

Aftermarket is not there as it is a relatively new engine and well they were found in none performance cars. MPGs suffers because of weight, straight line speed, nobody knows what is the limit on these Camaros. Handling, may suffer a little because of weight, but strap on the same Continental Summer tires found the Cobalt and I am sure it will do juuust fine. Besides the Camaro has clear advantage on the rear IRS as the Cobalt's suspension is basically maxed out unless you install coilovers and slicks.
On the Mustang GT, here a brand new base 2008 was advertised for $19,995 and a loaded to gills $21,995, and with that you get a sound that is not hysterical hear like in 4 banger (that alone is enough for price of admission), a proper RWD set-up...ie no torque steer and front plow. And this may be debatable, but now you are no longer driving a teenager's econobox. Downside... MPGs... hey, at least it is recommended to use 87oct.

Handling= its a heavier car. but im sure with some useless suspension mods it can handle pretty good.
MPG= its a V8 that probaly weighs 3500 pounds. what do you expect? 60 MPG?
Straight line speed= that aint everything in a car.
Aftermarket= the new camaro didnt even hit the streets yet and you think companies are going to have parts for it? gimmie a break
weight= whats more impressive? a V8 car with 300 hp and weighs 3500 pounds, gets 25 mpg and does mid 13's stock or a car that weighs 2900 pounds with 260 hp, gets 30 mpg, and can hardly break 13s?

The engine thats going into the base model Camaro has been out for years, theres nothing out for it in the existing cars that its in right now, pretty much anything that will be made will of course be for the V8 models just like the V6 mustang is the bastard step child. Yea there will always be intakes and exhausts but precious little beyond that.
Theres no way a brand new mustang GT is going for 21k unless they are slashing nearly 8k off the sticker, they must be hurting for sales more than we all know. 05s dont run mid 13s stock, most of them have a hard time getting into the 13s, Heck my friend with the 06 SS was waxing 427R Roushes at Beaver a few weeks ago.
Your not going to get a 3800lb car to corner or brake like a 2900lb car is going to, thats just physics against you. IRS or not. 40 extra hp doesnt make up for 900 extra lbs any day of the week.
Don't get me wrong I love the new Camaro and the current Mustang and the thought has crossed my mind, many times on getting one, even recently however its not a car you can drive year round living in PA. The fact of the matter is that the Cobalt SS is the fastest production car under under 30k bar none. Theres simply nothing else out that even comes close to matching the performance and thats across the board handling, braking, acceleration. Its been well documented by nearly every single car magazine or reviewer. At the track it even outperformed cars up to almost 2x the cost.
Hate it all you want, GM built an amazing car and its so hilarious to me that everyone has such a hard time accepting it.

Calm down dude. You are defending it as if you own one and it is god's gift to cars. I know you own a Cobalt SS and all but damn... well... the slower, worse handling, worse braking, worse resale value version anyway.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

The new M3 is around the same weight as the Camaro.. ARE you telling me because it is heavier that it has no chance vs a cobalt ?? I am confused.

The new Camaro V6 isn't in the same league as the Cobalt SS any more than a Corvette ZR1 is in the same league as a Ferrari 599 GTB. Both the Cobalt and Corvette are faster than their "competitors" and wil trounce them on the track in a hot minute, but speed isn't everything. A Camaro V6 costs a bit more than a Cobalt SS because it's a bit more car, plain and simple. It'll be sure to have a better ride, a more comfortable interior, cooler options, rear wheel drive goodness and you'll be driving a legendary ponycar.
Basically, if you don't "get" why the slower V6 Camaro is better than the Cobalt SS then I simply won't be able to explain it to you. It's a matter of essence and soul and passion, not specs and stats and speed. You'll understand one day, but not today.
In any case, what GM has pulled off with the Cobalt SS is an immense accomplishment. On the track it's a better car than it's european hot hatch rivals. The interior is still a bit too cheap and it's not as good to cruise in as it is to race with, but that can be overlooked because of it's bargain price. GM should be proud of itself and you guys should stop trying to prove that it's d**k is bigger than the Camaro's because it doesn't matter.
