Larger Tire for 02 Sierra?
Friday, October 24, 2008 7:34 AM
I have a 2002 Sierra SLT, and was wondering if I can put a larger tire on it, without screwing with the spedo.

Tire size now is 265/75/r16.

What could I go up to, if anything?

Yes you can. As long as the overall tire/wheel combo is not bigger than what you have stock. You can go all the way to 26's without having too tall of a rim/tire if you get the correct tire size. Good luck.

I was hoping I can get something a little larger on my factory rims.

If I can't, oh well. Will just get the same size again.

Well since your trying to go with a bigger tire size and keeping your stocks wheels, ya your spedo will be screwed unless the dealer offers a way to recalibrate it. I'm sure that will cost a bit of money though.

speedo will be off. If it is 4x4 you can go 285's usually without much or any rubbing.

285's would be good, and it doesnt effect your spedo that much. I got a hypertech programmer for my silverado, you can change tire size for recalibrating spedo on it.

You are saying go with 285/75/r16?

I am looking at...

General Grabber AT2

Hercules Terra Trac MT

Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S

Any other ideas?

yes 285/75r16's would be a very good size... shouldnt change anything much...

out of the ones you posted i like the geolander... i havent heard anything about any of the other ones... but we do put a ton of geolanders on at work...

another one to keep in mind... BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A... i have always had a soft spot for them...

hope that helps you out a bit in your decision...

I have the michelins, very good tire. Mine are semi agressive. I am not a hard core offroader though. I just need to be able to get out of the woods with a truck load of fire wood.

Thanks guys. I like those Coopers a bit.

I try to avoid BFG and Michelin for the most part. They always just seem to be more expensive then the competition. That's why I am looking at the General Grabber AT2's, similar in design to the BFG AT-KO, but almost half the cost.

i had the cooper discover stt's on a k5 blazer and they were great. the stt's are more aggresive than the st's though. Overall a great tire though

I do like those generals though

Whoa, that Cooper STT is a nice tire.

I wonder how it would handle snow, there is only one lateral biting edge in each lug.

I never had a problem with mine in snow and it was great off road, they are noisy though

I also had cooper tires on my 17's when i had the cavalier.
