Trying to Get me a V8

Okay well title says all I just had some observations frist. But before that let me explain what I am looking for.

I am looking of either a stang or camaro pref. between 98-2000. After I buy the car I am only looking to do a header back and intake, I just want to have a nice sound nothing rediculous.

I have noticed that every V8 is rediculously over priced, they are someone harder to come by so perhaps thats some.

But I wanted some opinions from any more expeirenced, for mustangs the 4.6 is fine and for camaro's I am looking for he forth gen. ls1.

I know the Ford/Chevy thing is thick with people. But in general since I am not looking for all out power what do you think is a wiser choice a mustang or chevy, as far as part prices and stories of repairs.. from sensible drivers.

Again don't want to start a chevyvs ford ruckuss just some opinions and expeirnce from both sides.

Thanks

Last gen F Bodies seem to be holding their values pretty decently.

If you're just going to do bolt ons, go with a stang. I wouldn't shame a Camaro that way. Enough housewives and hairdressers own 'stangs that it's not as big a deal.

Since you are not worrying about modding for big power, it is kind of up in the air, really. What kind of price range are you looking into?
For the Mustangs, I will say this.. The 4.6L SOHC Modular is awesome on gas for a V8(I have 4.10 rear gears and almost 400hp N/A and have gotten 25mpg).
If you find a good enough deal, finding a Cobra with the DOHC motor, you get a lot better breathing heads to begin with.
BUT, if you end up wanting to mod for big power down the road, the 4.6 SOHC motor IS going to hold you back a bit. anything from 96-98 has Non-PI heads and intake manifold, but it is a fairly cheap and east swap for the 99-04 PI intake/heads, but if you get crazy with upgrades and modding, I would personally go aftermarket before worrying too much about a PI swap.

For the Camaro... well... an LS1 is a MUCH happier engine to mod. They respond MUCH better to bolt ons than a Modular Ford engine does. They even have a horsepower edge on the Stangs from the factory. I don't know how well they are on gas stock, or modded, but you get a much more mod-friendly motor. You can easily get the horsepower my Mustang is putting out with just bolt-ons with an LS1. My car is FAR beyond bolt -ons lol.

But, I guess it is all up to what you prefer looking at and sitting in. test drive one of each. If you are not worried about how they respond to mods, and just want something with some good sound, it is kind of up in the air. I don't see any major reliability issues in either of them in stock form.

how is just owning and very lightly modding a car "shaming" it? You are a @!#$ moron.

And that is why I tried to appear as unbiased as possible. If I said ONE SINGLE THING that I felt edgest the Stang over the Camaro, all hell would break loose because I own one. The brand bashing and arguing is as redneck and brainless as nascar.

what about a 4th Gen with an LT1 ? Still a great motor, and they can be had for VERY cheap. I also see LS1 equipped Camaros going in the 6 to 10k region all the time.

i got my LS1 for $9400 with 80,000 miles. mid to low 13s stock with just drag radials. but who needs traction? spinning at the line on street tires and getting low 14s with a trap speed of 103 mph is cool too.
and one of my friends has an 04 mach 1 stang. got 12.9 with just an exhaust and drag radials

Your either talking out your ass or you have no money so anything you can't afford is"rediculously over priced"

With gas prices taking over the minds of consumers gas guzzling V8's that need premium aren't really the hot item nowdays, they are not in demand so prices have gone down, they are far from being ridiculously over priced. Now is the time to buy.

I could not agree more, I got my cherokee Very chreap. It is in immaculate condition and low miles but it was cheap as hell because at the time i got it gas was at almost $4 a gal. Its only the 4.0 s6 but still poor on gas. Used car dealerships are practically giving away gas guzzlers. And to the OP if you cant afford the car now, dont for a second think you will be able to afford the gas to drive it. My jeep gets 20mpg and i dump roughly $50 a week with a moderate amount of driving.

I think both of the last two posts are completely asinine. Last gen F-Bodies ARE ridiculously over priced these days and that has nothing to do with budgets. Just some very proud owners.

My parents 02 SS gets 29 MPG on the highway. I never really had any issues while I worked in GM dealers. Only real problem I saw was the cats. going out (low efficiency) but nothing with the motor. I have almost no experience with Mustangs so I cant say much there. Personaly I would go with a Camaro as I come from a GM family and prefer the looks over the Mustang.

From your list I come up with a 4.66:1 ratio of V-6 to V-8 cars.

Very nice of you to search like that for the guy, but only 8 of those are V8's lol. I see a couple of the stangs with decent mileage and decent prices too! Like I said before, these 4.6 modulars get awesome gas mileage! Don't know what the LS1's or LT1's are getting, but if mitdr is serious about 29mpg highway, then they are doing just about the same as the 4.6 Mustangs, which is awesome for a V8... The question would be, once you get this new V8, are you going to stay out of the gas enough to see that good mileage? lol

OH, and to clarify on my previous claim of my built N/A 4.6 getting 25-26MPG. That was an average speed of about 45mph driving from Bangor, ME to Bar Harbor, ME durring tourist season. it includes all the crusing downtown Bar harbor. I am convince that if i were easy on it and drove a week on just the highway I might be able to touch 28-30mpg.

Cheap is out there for sure. The right price for the right car, one you'd actually want to DD, is another story. You can armchair from your seat, but until you see the cars in person its a whole different story.

Since Lucky did a search, I figured I would to.. 75mile radius around Reading, PA.

Those are all the camaro's and mustang's I could find on E-Bay. I assume you aren't opposed to a Trans-Am?

This one doesn't look terrible for it's mileage:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___1996-Pontiac-Firebird-Trans-Am-Hardtop-1Owner-24MPG-LT1_W0QQitemZ330274388847QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20TrucksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330 274388847&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A7%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

other than that I only found one other decent looking one within 75 miles of Reading... and it is a prime example of a car that is WAY overpriced. It might have low miles and be unmolested, but it is not like a WS6... just a regular 02 Trans-Am slushbox for almost $18k... BULL

Your answere is NO I am not broke, but just becuase I have some money, doesn't mean I shouldn't look hard and get opinions and just rush the buy, thats called stupid broke or rich. But I can get where your coming from I might appear cheap, I just like to get a good deal if I can.

Alot of the searched cars listed here, I looked at, there are some great deals, I just wanted to see what everyone had to say about maybe them personally owning one.

Again thanks for the input I am going to be looking at a few cars this coming week I will see if I can't find something nice.

LS1>4.6 2valve any day of the week and twice on sunday

and that includes gas milage

I know guys running 11.9 and better on streetable bolt on/cam/tune setups and still getting 30+mpg. I think a 4valve n/a cobran can pull that off but all the guys with quick n/a 4valves I see are running like 4.56 and 4.88 gears so there is a tradeoff. lets put it this way, stock LS1's (if there are even any stock ones left) can still outrun 05+ GT's that have the new 3valve motor and all that VVT crap

not to mention that the transmissions that came with each are better for the LS1's. oh yeah, and the torq arm/panhard bar rear sus setup of the F-body is superior to the mustang 4link

alot more people bitch about the f-body rear axle breaking when compare to the ford 8.8. the 8.8 is better however keep in mind the LS1's are laying down more torq and cutting quicker 60's due to the better sus. if you don't launch like an ape you can actually make the gm rear last quite long.

the downside to the f-body is that most people you will talk to about modding it have the "grunt grunt......drag race.......grunt grunt full slicks.........grunt grunt.........every other car sucks becouse........." additude
