i was looking at a dodge looking for say a 2002-2003 but i been looking on autotrader and they have a few F350's with the 4 doors *which i want and need* and the price range is 15k for them with like 80k miles hell thats no where near broken in lol
but i'll check that site in alittle bit
O, ok. Ya, I was gonna say stay away from the brand new ones. I know dodge at least, and most likely ford, is having problems with their diesels. The "rule makers" (whoever that is) is making them be cleaner and the only way they could in such short time was to "hide" the emissions which get left inside the turbo and the exhaust. Our mechanics are replacing turbos and exhaust components like they're going outta style. Luckily they're all mostly warranty but still.
I like Cummins too because they come with a 5 year/100K mile warranty. I know you'd prolly be past this with an 02/03 and im not sure if it's transferable but just throwin it out there.
Now is definately the time to buy diesel. Nobody wants um so the prices have dropped a ton. I know we were taking trades of under 100K mile rams, newer, and they were only paying like 15K

I dont have any experience with Duramax, but i do have experience with Allison transmissions and they are the @!#$. I love them.
The Powerstrokes are plagued with problems. The variable vanes in the turbos wear into a grove, the turbo and EGR get clogged with carbon all the time, the Y-pipes crack, exhaust manifolds leak (they are designed with no gaskets, the fix is to install gaskets). They may be cheaper at first, but you will spend the money you saved on repairs. (the 7.3L is better than the 6.0L and im not sure how the newer 6.4L is)
The main problem with a Cummins is the Dodge truck itself. The engine is rock solid, easy to work on, and tows like a dream. The most weight i have hauled with my dads 07' Cummins is 1300lbs and the truck didnt even know it was there. FYI - Dodge's automatic transmissions are known for being junk, so if you get a Cummins, a wise move would be to get a manual transmission.
I did work for a Dodge/Ford dealer for a few months and in that time there was always 2 Powerstrokes in the shop and 2 more in the parking lot waiting to be fixed. We also had one Cummins come in (the whole time i worked there) and the owner was running home heating oil instead of Diesel and he killed the injection pump.
I recommend getting a 6-speed Cummins and i would avoid Powerstrokes like the plague. There are "kits" to fix the common problems with the Dodge trucks(my buddy has an 02' Cummins and has done this) and thats as much as i know.
"Project 69'"
1969 Chevrolet C/10, 1/2 ton, 2wd
-Boosted LS1?
-Richmond ROD 6-speed(will get sometime)
-Posi 12-bolt(built w/eaton posi unit and richmond 3.73 gears)
-Disc brake and 5 lug swap
+little extras
