96 Eclipse GST for 3K?

My dad is trying to sell his Eclipse. It has 117K miles on it, but it's in excellent shape. I'm half-assed tempted to buy it. All the suspension pieces were recently replaced. Previous owner has all service records. The interior is really, really well taken care of. The motor is bone stock, but my dad has a Spec Stage II put in it not long ago. I think it'd be a great little car.

Only issue is no AC. He's been quoted about 900 to get everything for that replaced.

What do you guys think? They're supposed to be really well built motors. The cars hold their value to a certain extent. And to top it all off it's on the lines of what I've been wanting.

Hehe, he asked me to list it on Craigslist for him. So I think I'll wait and think about it a bit before I put it up

2.0 DOHC well built ? Motor has head gasket issues. Family means you should get it for a good price, I say buy it and drive it.

The question is what would be your purpose for the car - daily driver or fun car to build? I wouldnt get it as a daily driver unless you're positively sure it was well taken care of - has the timing belt been changed according to the maintenence schedule? How about frequent oil changes? What is the service interval for the turbocharger itself? All good things to know...

good buy if you ask me, might wanna do a 6-bolt block swap later on if you plan on adding more power. put a cometic headgasket in it and check the timing belt for play. make sure to stay away from wheel hop and one wheel wonders, too many miles on that tranny to be hard on it. if you do youll be dealing with a diff pin through your tranny case. other than that killer buy. good luck

Well, told my old man I'd buy it. Haven't settled on a price. He paid 8K for it, but just wants to get rid of it. So I might just pay him the full 3K. We were talking about it today. Somewhere around 100K miles the previous owner looks like he got bored. It has a new PS, alternator, Water pump, and timing belt. Not to mention the new shocks/springs. It has two 10" subs in the back as well. Has a catback exhaust too, it's SS but I can't remember who made it : / A short through shifter was dropped in it two weeks ago.

So overall I think it's a hellove a deal.

Only problem is I have to sell one of my vehicles : / Which is taking longer than expected. He said he's in no real rush to sell it, so he doesn't mind holding it for me. Really need to get that AC installed as soon as I can though. Hot as hell down here.

Pics tomorrow.
