2009 VW Rabbit (Golf VI)
Monday, September 15, 2008 5:18 PM

VW is saying for now that the Golf VI will come to the U.S. in the spring or summer of next year, meaning you’d better hurry if you want a current-gen Rabbit or GTI. Three- and five-door configurations will continue to be offered. Engines will include the 170-hp, 2.5-liter five-cylinder and a 140-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel, but the twincharger motor is less probable; it would likely be far too expensive for the sub-$20,000 class in which the Rabbit now plays. Expect the new U.S.-spec Golf to use the same transmissions as before: a five-speed stick and a six-speed auto, although the seven-speed DSG is still on the table.
A 210-hp GTI based on the sixth-gen car will be launched at the 2008 Paris auto show in October, and VW says it will be every bit as differentiated from the standard Golf as the current model. GTI transmissions—a six-speed stick and the six-speed DSG—will stay the same. There’s no word yet on when to expect the Golf VI–based GTI. The U.S. likely won’t get the screamer R version—the heir to the V-6–powered R32’s throne—that will be based on the GTI and boast at least 265 horsepower from the same basic engine.

Here's hoping the diesel version costs less than $20,000

Man they totally lifted those headlights from the new scirocco. I hope this means the Scirocco is coming here.

VW: keeping the aftermarket wheel industry alive and well. The car looks great except those horrifying rims.

Wow I love the german's top/black, low/tan interiors.

Exteriorwise, it's a mess. I vote for the ugliest wheels ever made. Hub caps would of looked better than this crap.

I was hoping that the wheels looked horrible only because it was going so fast....

The exterior looks okay, save those rims. They're worse than Mk V rims, and those never got easier to look at. Otherwise as far as hatches go, the Golf is one of my less hated. I'd only go for a Mk III or IV though. As for the half and half interior, not so much. I'd prefer to see all one color. Either rental car gay tan or black.

I like the current look better. This is exactly what they did to the 2008 City Golf. Uglified it (my opinion)

It's just a tad boring... you'd think a car with this much history would have a little more character.
Than again, VW does want to increase its sales volume, and bland cars do well in this market segment

You know... I hate VW quality (the cars we get here at least) but I've always admired that German common sense. The new Rabbit isn't significantly different in style from the 1974 one. It's still a FWD 2 or 4 door hatch of similar-ish proportions. How many cars can say that? Look at other equally old nameplates like the Corolla or Civic who only share their names with the older cars. It's a shame in a way and I can really applaud VW for always sticking to their guns and keeping their car line straight. In 2043 I can almost guarantee that they'll still be a Golf/Rabbit and Jetta in their lineup and that those cars will be of similar design style as today's vehicles.

Tradition has it's own merit.

the 5 door looks blah however i think the 3 door model with the flared out fenders and very pronounced line on the side looks pretty hot.
as far as the interior ... im already in love

cant wait to see the mkVI GTI it should look even hotter

also i think they should bring back the Golf name

Looks like they brought the styling back to the MK4 days almost... from an exterior standpoint this looks like it should have been the mkV and the current models the mkVI... The front end seems to have a touch of a the new scirocco as well which I like.

is this 240hp or 340hp? reason i ask is because i see twincharger motor to the right. is the twin another motor?

these cars are nice and i did test drive one when i was car shopping recently. very good car

As of now.
2.5L 170HP gasoline
2.0L 140HP diesel

And yes the twincharger is a separate 1.4L gasoline motor sold in Europe that carries a supercharger and a turbo and still does near 40mpgs.

I can't believe they uglied up the already ugly mkV.

If you could still buy a brand new mk4, I'd get one.

Here is a update on this. So for 2010, Volkswagen is again discarding the Rabbit badge in favor of the Golf nameplate used globally. The base 2-door, 2.5-liter gas engine Golf starts at $17,490 while the 4-door starts at $19,190. Like the Jetta, the TDIs come with a higher level of equipment than the base Golf and start at $21,990 (2-door) and $22,590 (4-door) with a 6-speed manual. The new GTI starts $23,290.
EPA's FuelEconomy.gov site shows the Golf TDI rated at 30 mpg city and 42 highway. Similarly, the EPA also lists the 2010 Jetta TDI with DSG at the same level an improvement from the 2009 model's 29/40.

I don't know this generation looks like a blatant rip-off of the rounded 90's civic hatchback. And from the exterior stand point i'd say honda did it much nicer.

Haha my dad had an old old VW Rabbit diesel... thing was nice as hell at the time. Full leather interior and a cassete player. BUT it only had about 35 HP but that was alright when you were getting 68 mpg highway and diesel was cheaper than gas.
