Jon rebuilding the engine in the trans am?

Unfortunately.
I had originally brought the car down to a very reputable LSX shop in Delaware for what I thought was a push rod. However, once they took the oil cap off and saw smoke spewing forth that only got worse when you revved the engine, it was obvious something else was amiss.
Cylinders 5 and 7 are shot. Compression was about half, if not less than what it should be. I have basically ben drivng around a v6 WS6. So the block that is in the Subaru is one we picked up from a guy near Allentown. While It's definitely not complete, It only has 11K on it. It's stock, so everything it needs can be swapped over from the current engine.
While this is the perfect time to go nuts and upgrade everything, the funds aren't there. As it is, I had to get a personal loan to get this all taken care of. The shop is giving me a good deal but with the parts and labor, this is still going to cost me north of 2K. I'm going to keep the old block and when time/money permits, build a bullet proof monster. Hopefully they don't find any problems with the top end when they switch everything over. I'll probably have them put hardened pushrods in just because it's already apart and pray that the heads are in good shape. Even with 124K on them.
So when all is said and done, I'll have an 11K bottom end with a 124K top end. Ugh.
oh dude, that sucks. i feel for you man

thats cool, but if you are going to do that you might want to upgrade the rear end first. you can upgrade your stock 10 bolt to be stronger, but its still going to be weak (mainly due to the ring gear). the GM 12 bolt is a good choice. its pretty much a direct replacement to the 10 bolt and the 12 bolt can hold a good amount of power. there are 2 guys at the local track i race at that have the 12 bolt. they both run around high 9s low 10 second area. the other choice is the ford 9 inch. its bullet proof really. but they are not cheap. the cheapest i seen is $2000 and that was for a bare bones rear end. something to think about

Good info. I think my stock rear end may already be singing a little. Eventually everything on the car will get upgraded because as you know, when you add power, things break.
Phil: Had to take out a personal loan to pay for this. I hated to do it but I hate not having a vehicle running even more.
I recognized you on the highway but I was freaking exhausted and it was all I could do to keep awake. Thank god I'm on days now.
what a dirty block tease....
Yeah that's what I should have done John to do my car, then it would have at least been paid off at some point. I can't really complain I've made some real headway on my cards..

You could get a short block from Lingenfelter for $2,200 and just put the rest of your parts from the original engine onto it and right there you could have an engine that is set up and good for 600+whp
The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno

Plus at least another grand for install. Besides, I'm not going to put stock LS1 heads on a Lingenfelter block. Trust me i've though of just about every option. At least this way I can get the car back on the road and I know the bottom end is good to go for alot of miles. Top end is way easier to work on than bottom end. Hopefully that won't give me any problems either. The pushrods are getting replaced with hardened ones and I'm probably going to have a set of LS6 lifters put in for good measure. The only thing that could go on the heads now is something related to the valves.
I dropped the block of yesterday. The shop is crazy backed up but I'm thinking I'll have her back soon after we get back from the beach this weekend.
have you change the spark plugs on the LS1 yet jon?

Ugh, I think my forearms still have the scratch marks. I put NGK TR55's in which is what everyone on LS1tech has a hardon now for. Also put MSD wires in at the same time. Man that was a pain in the ass. I literally had to lay across the engine to get to #8 plug. The rest wern't hard. Next time I'll try #8 from the bottom and see how it goes. I think GM actually made a gigantic shoe horn and used that to get the engine in. Good lord. There is nothing easy to get to on these things.

i still have bruises on my arms and i did the spark plug change 3 weeks ago. i also used MSD wires and NGK TR55 plugs. far as number 8 goes, i looked from the bottom and i said "there is no way im getting my arm and a wrench up there." i did get number 8 from the top. i removed the coil packs and that made it easier. well, a little bit easier. i honestly dont know what GM was thinking. they make one of the greatest small block V8s ever and mate it with one of the weakest rear ends ever. then they stuff it in a car with very little to no room to do something as simple as a spark plug change.

Yup morons. I moved the coil packs also. That was a blast trying to get those last 2 bolts out from under the cowl. I didn't even put them back on. Screw it.

Par for the course for GM logic, really.
Seems any GM V6/8 engine over the past 20 years has at least one spark plug that calls for a blood sacrifice in order to be changed.

Awesome to hear you got that beauty back on the road. Now you have a blast with that beautiful car, powerful motor and 10bolt... while I enjoy my ugly, unreliable, powerful car with a rock slid 8.8
lol
