My dilema...
Monday, September 08, 2008 5:57 PM
I have two vehicles I'm parting ways with. A Dakota and a Miata. Both are getting older and it's getting ridiculous paying for two insurance on two cars I barely drive. I want to trade the truck in and sell the Miata. Gas mileage isn't a huge concern(I drive less than 6K miles a year, all city driving).

I wanted to get a new car, but I was given an alternative. Either buy a new car now...a cheap, cheap new car. Or, buy a used car and wait 3 years-for our other car to be paid off-and I can get anything I want under 30ish thousand.

So, I'm probably buying a used car...But I want something that's modifiable, backseat(4 doors is a huge plus) for well under 10K.
I just don't want to get a car that has a billion miles on it, or one that's 15 years old.

I need ideas. There are several car dealships here that you can sorta call and tell them what you want and they'll find it for you...but the only car that comes to mind is a late 2000 Neon, lol....and there has to be other options. The locating process can take awhile so I'd like to get some ideas going now.

my advise, go on carmax's web site, you can but in the body type your looking for and pick your price range and see what comes up.

I've never heard of carmax, it was listed on my other thread. Is it sorta like autotrader? I'll check it out in a little bit.

Nice, ty. That'll come in handy, but I don't know what cars I should be looking at. There are very few vehicles in my area, even 500 mile from here there are only like 5 neons listed on carmax.

Gotta have a manual trans.

I would be thinking used civics, or slightly older than the civic(because of price) used accords. Maybe a Celica? Tiburon? Eclipse? all can be had in some trim form or another used in your price range. Just a couple other options off the top of my head. ALSO, Subaru Impreza. Should be able to get an 00-04 2.5RS or TS for your price range.

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

For what? I'm trying to save money by buying a used vehicle. I don't need another car, I have to get one. The truck is too much of a vehicle for me, bad mpg, lots of little problems etc. The Miata is in GREAT shape, but it doesn't have a backseat. Up to two days a week I need to take my son to daycare. My wife doesn't drive standard, so it doesn't work.

I'd kill someone for a Subaru. Ty for that advice. I wouldn't have thought I could afford one. The only thing I've learned from buying used cars is I want to get something with low miles. I don't care if it's a 1990 Civic, if it has 20K miles I'd buy it. The more I look at Honda the less likely they look for me. For a 2000 with like 100K miles they are still selling for 8K. Hard for me to justify that over a 04 Neon with 25K miles for the same price....I know, build quality, etc.

How many miles are too many?
