Test drove an 08 ss...slow???
Friday, July 11, 2008 5:44 PM
So i test drove the new turbo charged cobalt ss. Tranny felt the same as the cav, I instantly felt at home ( I have an 03 eco cav). Although, the car did not feel fun and full of life like my cav does. It didnt feelt fast. So I was disappointed. It may have been ALOT faster then my cav, but my cav feels faster and more lively....so I would say my cav is alot more fun to drive. I will stick with my cav and save my 25k.

The car had 64kms on it only, perhaps the computer adjusted boost due to engine break in periods?

I'm not sure how the computer is on those. It is possible though. I understand what you mean. I test drove an 04 Scion tC and then right after drove an 03 Civic Si. I know the Si was a lot faster but it felt like a dog compared to the tC.

I haven't driven one yet but so far I'm not impressed. I'll hold my comments til I receive more info and drive one myself.

Think good, flat torque curve. Not a steep peak, but a nice, fat power-band. Could explain the feeling.

A more accurate observation has never been typed. These should be the starting points before any serious performance modification. What's the point of making a serious performer if you can't control it's power?

Lively = poor traction.

You want to feel planted.

My Altima felt like it was all over the place when I first got it, and that the roads were freakin greasy. Well, after a change of tires, it felt solid, and planted. (Although, I still need a smaller turn radius)

Could be a couple of factors.. Since it had very few kilometers, the computer might be holding it back some, the gas tank is probably full of regular gas, not premium..

? First model year for the tC was 2005, only the XA and xB technically had an 04 model year, tC's were the last of the Scions to come to US shores, and became available first in June of 04 as an 05 model... just sayin I like them, they feel zippy and more powerful then they are, fun to drive.

to add to that a stock 03 civic Si is not faster then a stock tC

as to the OP .. must have been something wrong with the car ether that or your butt dyno is broken .. even if the car was on regular gas and the ecu was holding back it would still be alot faster then your cavy lol

Yeah but fly by wire makes it feel like its not, I drove my friends saturn redline and its about the same power as my cav, but it doesn't feel like it at all. Fly by wire is teh suck when you want a car to feel fast.

fly by wire lol i think you confused that with drive by wire... which really wouldn't have an impact on how fast the car feels in a straight line...

however i believe your thinking about Electronic throttle control... which i also have on my tC and my car doesn't feel slower then what it is at all

When I drove a prototype in November I had the opposite feeling as you. Granted it will not leap like a RWD 500HP monster, but it was peppy, and it was worlds of a difference compared to puny S/C version... blah.
Drive by wire has nothing to do with it, infact GM has one of the quickest respond ones around, the quickest being Nissan. Try a German N/A car, then you will feel slow D-B-W response.

mercedes FTL. drove a friends C32 AMG, and the throttle responce is terrible. My girlfriends 323 isnt terrible... but it doesnt have enough power to know the difference. but neither is comparable in responceto a direct linkage

Very well could have been an 05 then. It was a few months back.

TC's are frickin slow, I didn't like the one I test drove at all, I am glad I didn't trade my cavi for it.

Anyways back on topic, I am gonna go test drive the one I saw at the dealer today and I will let you guys know how I feel about it.

I hate Drive by Wire so much.. I can't understand how replacing a single piece of wire with sensors, computers, etc made much sense???

Because now your car will not let you open the throttle past 25% from a dead stop, so that you don't blow out your motor mounts from doing hole shots or break an axle. And maybe someday, when all cars are drive-by-wire, the police will be able to press a button and prevent a high-speed chase through downtown Los Angeles. Plus, when tuned properly, drive-by-wire runs a lot smoother at low RPM's than a cable drive, because the throttle body can open and close itself more slowly than your foot can, making the car less prone to bucking when driving through traffic.

I'm not saying I am a fan of drive-by-wire (I think it sucks balls, personally), but there are reasons for its use.

drive by wire has alot to do with the fell on the butt dyno while driving them , when i drove the ss/sc it felt the very same way , and my cav had alot more butt dyno feel

also my cav beat several ss/sc's at the drag strip here

trust me ride in the pass side and have someone drive it hard , it will feel alot different

this car isn't a one trick pony
I mean it should stop well, turn well and i bet the interior is better then cav.
also the competion is caliber srt-4, mazda speed 3, the Si isn't include in that group, scion is a slug
the wrx is in the same class and its awd.
Personaly i just don't know what people want from Gm. The supercharger was out classed so gm brought the turbo car out
which bothers me is SI runs on hype costs more and every one loves it because it hon-duh. The Scion is such a turd only mindless idiots would
by a sports coupe for that price with what its packing. its alomost as funny as the G35 that did a 14.9 ooo and only 30,000 what a car

and a cavalier is blazing fast in comparison lol...
if your comparing it to your turboed cavalier then of course its gonna feel slow.. thats only common sense
stock for stock my tC felt just as quick as my Z24, if not slightly quicker. however the build quality and feel of the tC is literally 100X better lol.
if you think the cavalier is a better car you're just fooling yourself.

you do realize the tC is only $17,000? that's more then 5-7k less then the other cars you listed, its not even in the same class
its packing more standard features then anything else in its class... also find me a brand new car for 17K that's faster then the tC or even a better deal? good luck.. the scion tC is successful for a reason
not to mention the tC is a very good base for modifications..

no need for the hate, besides no one here directly compared the tC to any of these higher end cars anyways lol
