using an 89 Civic lx (338,000 miles original motor) for my gas miser commute. Well, it used to be a gas miser. Lately, its been down to 22mpg overall. Blowing black soot out the tail pipe with some smoke. Running through a few quarts of oil every couple of weeks, and it has no power. Changed the spark plugs today and they were covered in oil. Replaced them and I have power again, for a while.
Is this likely the piston rings, or do I likely have blown valve seals? Is there a way to tell for certain?

If I had to guess.. Blown valves.

black = fuel
blue/white = oil
white = coolant
most high mile hondas ive seen needed new valve seals , burning oil usually doesnt hurt mileage in drastic amounts , unless the motor is very tired
Go with both, and use an oil flush additive next oil change.
theres always a differntial cylinder pressure test... or a wet and dry compression test..
ok, its not worth the money to yank the motor and rebuild the engine. Replacing valve seals wouldn't be too bad though. Is there a diagnostic to determine which for sure?

now, im really tired right now so nuthings really making sense, but if valve seals are gone, tehn in theory a differential cylinder pressure test can determine if it is really the case or not unless im forgetting something..
