So, right on the corner by my house there is a really small dealer selling this beauty. It's a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 Xtreme. Again, it's another one just like I want, 4 cyl, auto, and this time its in amazing shape. Now, I'll give you the specs and you tell me what its worth.
2000 S-10 Xtreme
4 Cyl 2.2 Engine
Automatic Transmission
29MPG (at least thats what the tag says)
Clean Title
Mileage: 88,000
Excellent condition inside and out
Price: $6495
Now, I do love this truck but to me the price is a little steep for being a 9 year old, 4 cylinder truck with about 90K miles. However, the condition of the truck is excellent. I was hoping to spend no more than $5200 on a new car or truck. So whats everyones opinion on the price and everything else?
Thanks
well, i would think you could drop that price pretty decently.
88k is NOT low milage. The front end is not stock, and I am sure you could nit pick yourself down quite a bit.
It does look nice though. I too like the extreme's....but they were out of my beater truck price range.
Looks nice though. did you drive it at all?
Nah, I haven't driven it or even talked to the salesmen yet. I saw it was being fixed at a local repair shop across the street last week. It looks bone stock to me, whats different on the front end? I'm curious.
Also what do you think is a fair price to buy it for? I'm coming up with some offers and such and the more opinions on things I get the more leverage I tend to get! Thanks.
you dont see a difference?

not that it looks BAD, but hopfully something to know the price down.
Figure out why it was at the shop, get a repair history, and go from there.....and listen to it run. If its the 2200 listen for a lifter tap/timing chain smack....anything.
I think you can get it down to 5 no prob, any lower than that will depend on your skillz as a negotiator. Use anything you can....tell him you wanted a v-6 xtreme in a different color, hopefully he will knock it down a bit just to get the sale......and make sure you let him know you arent happy the aftermarket bumper removed the fog lights

Oh yeah, wow you're right. I think I forgot because a friend of mine also had that Xenon front and I got used to it! You really think I could talk him down $1600? I think for $5,000 I'd buy it TODAY. I just don't think I'll pay anything higher right now. Right now, here's what I'm thinking I'll use to get him to come down on the price:
90K miles isn't low mileage for a 4 cyl especially.
I wanted one in black or blue (even though I actually love the red)
I saw it getting fixed last week
I'm not a fan of the Xenon front, especially with no fog lights in it!
I'm going to look up the blue book on it again and see what the price is real fast too. Lemme get back to you on that.
Blue Book says its worth $6395 in excellent condition. I highly doubt I'll be able to talk him down to $5,000.
I have an excellent value of $5,995
I might be missing some optional equipment it has. And that is NOT in EXCELLENT condition. That would fall under GOOD condition, which you can probably talk down to 5k....if your good
I find that the smaller car lots are much more flexable on the price since they USUALLY pick them up for 1/2 thier list price at auction.
Take it for a drive, see if anything seems "off" with it.
I just emailed you the blue book page I got. It does specify PA, maybe there is a difference in price between states....
Thanks for the e-mail! I checked it out and I had basically all the same stuff as you and it was about $400 less in your area I guess. I'd like to know why I can't get the prices for other conditions besides "Excellent." Thats all that shows up. I'm guessing its around $5500 in good condition and then I could talk him down to $5,000. If only it would show up!!
if you got 5k cash, he'll take it
ya bro, if you walk up with $5k cash, they'll take it.
if you come empty handed asking for $5k, they'll prolly counter-offer, but if you walk in and say "I want that truck, today, for $5k....and here's the cash" they'll bite.
Hmm... I hope he feels the same. I really would show up with $5,000 cash too.

that works with private party sales, not so much with used car lots or dealerships. it might work, but not likely.
and 88k miles is actually quite low. the average car accumulates 15k miles per year. that would mean that this truck should have 120k miles on it. $6K will probably be all you can get them down to.
^ Thats my thinking too. I just don't have $6000 to shell out on it. I can do $5,000 but really no higher. I'm going to go down there today and see what the guy says and test drive it.
its a smaller dealer so they might not turn down a cash off. worse case is you take the 5k out of the bank. go down there with 5k cash in hand. test drive it and if you like it say i want this truck today and heres 5k cash im willing to offer. im thinking they would bite on it.

for most dealerships, i would agree, but we're talking about a place that might sell like 1-2 cars a month if they're lucky.
I would agree with the above.
Wave the cash in front of them after some discussion, and they will probably go for it if it is a small lot.
The only tough part is that those trucks get excellent fuel economy. A friend of mine has 150k on his 99 S10 and gets 500 miles to the tank full. It's a 5speed with no A/C. But as stated before, this is a small place, they might work with you since return business and customer satisfaction is what keeps them in business. Good luck.
Yeah, this guy sells about 6-7 cars on his lot. Its just a really small lot on the corner of my road. It's definitly not his full time job I'm sure. I'm thinking of going down there, driving it, and if I like it I'll just make him the offer of $5,000, I'll say thats all I have and I'd bring the cash today. The stick on the window says it gets 29MPG I'm wondering if thats true. Anyone know, or know of a way I could check into that? By the way I love the help you guys are throwing out to me its awesome keep it coming!
I get right around that milage in my 1st gen s-10 with 2.8 v-6, 5 speed, and 400-500lbs of scrap in the back, so it seems reasonable.
I looked it up and for the 2.2 I4 it says 22 city 29 hwy
my fiance has an 2000 GMC Sonoma, 5 spd 2200.. 280,000+ miles... never uses a drop of oil

I just walked down there to talk to him and test drive it, but he was out to lunch for an hour. I'll try back at around 3:00. I checked it over again real good and the paint has some nicks and scratches but really nothing too major. The tail gate might need to be repainted. Other than that, its pretty good, no rust or anything anywhere. I'm a little worried about the gas mileage and I'm starting to think he's going to just reject my offer of $5,000. I won't know until I try though!
I would recomend having the cash in hand....seeing the green will make him feel happy in his pants.
I would also recomend not flopping your final offer right out on the table in front of him....negotiate a little and then say...wellllll, I got this on me, and I can NOT spend more than this, do we have a deal?
I think theyll go for it.
Ah, I forgot... I also wanted to mention that he's selling this blue Chevrolet Blazer (seen in the 2nd pic) for a much better deal, which might help me negotiate on the S-10. It's a 2000 Blazer, 5-spd, V6, 80k, really clean, for $4495! Yet the S-10 is Auto, 4 Cyl, 88k, clean, and $6495......I think the Blazer is a great deal for the price, but obviously I want the S-10. I hope I can use that to my advantage.

Yeah, maybe I'll run to the bank really fast and just get the cash out. That way I have it right there and I'll just simply tell the guy, here's what its worth to me and show him the money. I'll be a bit upset if he doesn't take it but I don't think I wanna spend more than $5k on a new car.
