It's been awhile since I've posted anything on this website of value, But since I mostly troll the "Other Cars" section on a regular basis I thought a few here would appreciate an interesting car.
It's a 1968 Chevy Corvair
110hp powerglide
32k miles
For those that don't know Corvairs are only the Second car GM ever turbo charged, next to the Riviera I believe. These are often compared to VW's and Porches ( Engine swaps across all 3 platforms are common) due to their rear engine air cooled design. Engines ranged from 95 hp to 180 turbo charged. Styling was an early indicator to the direction of the Corvairs replacement, the Camaro.
As for a build thread it'll be pretty basic. The car needs rear floors, but I'm doing all 4 to know that it's done. the Battery box will be replaced as well as the seats with modern reclining sport buckets. Engine will get new oil pan.gasket, tranny gasket, push rod tubes & Seals, valve cover gasket, thermostat, valve stem seals and lots more uninteresting odds and ends to stop leaks that 40 year old seals and gasket just can't do anymore.
I'm reading up on lowering it properly and will have new wheels in the coming weeks. (Coy's C5's in gunmetal)
All small potatoes...Hope you all like something different and definitely unique.

grand nationals ? werent some f-bodies pacecar replicas turbocharged ? oh what about the sylone and typhone granted there not cars
corvairs are neat little cars, i dig 'em
i think he means the first trurbo was the riviera then the corvair then grand nartional and so on.so therfore he is right
^
Yes thanks.
These were also comparable to Corvettes of the time for their independent suspension and handled better than average due to their weight distribution.
ya but they also leaked oil and cought fire easily lol.just ribbing ya man nice pickup
Kyle!!!! I haven't talked to you in forever, but I heard you picked this up. Looks awesome man =)
what size are the wheels your picking up????
An old friend of the family is a Corvair nut, he has a couple fully restored Corvairs... hell he even sold off a ton of spare Corvair parts he had laying around and it got him enough $ to buy a new Boxster with cash LOL
what the hell man
why didnt you tell us this? i wanna see this @!#$
I haven't told anyone because I got it last week. Between my Grandma passing away and work being absolutely nuts I just haven't had any time
Don't worry you'll be one of the first to get a ride in my slow boat
It was just one of those things, I've been after one for many years and happened upon one literally around the corner for sale. After looking at how rusted it was and how bad of condition it was in I decided against it. I did a few searches and found this car for much less than the other un-restored, rusty rotted non running car I looked at initially. Even though it had 2 points against it (2nd slowest motor automatic) the condition and price was just too good a deal to pass up.
I'd drive it to come see you guys but it'll be up on blocks for at least another month. And the rims will be 17's 18's are pushing it.
Nice black 'vair Geeds I trailerd the car home the exact same way. whats she got for a motor? seems like a 110 possibly?
Thanks for the compliments
sorry to hear about your grandma man
but ya maybe i will stop by today if you are going to be around
i am heading up that way to get my car tuned so hopefully i can stop by
give me a shout i will PM you my number if you dont still have it
It looks really nice! I personally would go with these wheels ...
They are Nitrous II wheels by the Foose division of MHT or if you want to go with the grey option I'd go with these ...
Nitrous Grey, also by Foose design.
Just a thought though

I don't think the corvair needs a thermostat since it's actually air cooled. Nice car though. Keep us updated on it.
2009 Ford Mustang V6
It actually has 2 thermostats. They control 2 "doors" on the underside shrouds that open when the heater box around the exhaust manifold is high enough to expand them, and open these doors to let cooler air in and cool the temp. pretty basic but cool non the less.
See those 2 cylinders at the end of the rods? the one on the right is OK. the one on the left has expanded and not retracted....hence why I have one on order. You can see the flaps at the back in that pics aswell.
Ryan: I'll probably have to pass for tonight, I'm not sure what time I'll be home, plus I'm packing and going to bed early as I'm off to Vegas Tomorrow
I'll call you when I get back and getcha over here.
too bad you don't live closer to southwest PA, I know a guy that currently owns 11 of them bad boys. he could literally tell you what thread pitch is on every bolt in the car. he knows his Corvair @!#$
plus he has a ton of parts that he basically gives away.
That does suck. Maybe try for a contact # as I'm after a 180hp turbo 4 speed set up. plus about a million other parts
Thanks!!
sweet man have fun
give me a shout when you get back and we will have to take a peak at that bitch
Nice corvair I had a 64 convertible 110hp 4 speed 10 years ago. The 65+ hardtops are sleek looking. I'd love to have a v8 in the back seat of one....
The riveria wasn't avaible with a turbo until 1979. They all had n/a v8's until then.
The corvair and olds jetfire both came out with turbochargers in 1962. The corvair was also the first car at gm to have irs.
My father had a 1962 Corvair in red with red interior and a white top. His was the smallest engine option which was later blueprinted and was mated to a 4spd. He sold it many years ago, and I've been on the hunt for a replacement for his. Beautiful find man.
looks good kyle, when is the motor coming out??? =D
@!#$s' staying in there....well unless I have some luck finding my 180hp turbo 4 speed set up. .....which I just might
For the time being the engine is staying, I can do so much with the engine in it's almost torn apart as it is.
