The North Toronto Vehicle Auction - what a Gong Show.

600+ cars, 3 lanes, an entire day of hilarity.

If you have never been to an auction ... it is pretty much what you expect - Auctioneers yelling, people bidding, minorities fitting perfectly into their respective stereotypes - organized Chaos.

Now you'd think you'd see some amazing deals, right? Well, yeah, but not on the cars you would expect ...

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 90K Kms ... 5K

2003 Hyundai Accent w/o A/C 200K Kms ... 6K

Hmm. The Hyundai sold at ABOVE retail ... the Jeep way below. It gets Better.

Oil burning smoking ticking 1997 Saturn SL1 180K Kms ... 3K

1999 Cavalier 2.2L Auto All Options 120K KMs ... 1K

Ok, well the last one made sense. J-Bodies are worthless. But the Saturns surprised me. Seems with Gas prices increasing at an exponential rate people want smaller cars, and so blind is their desire they're willing to get totally ripped off in the process ... the amount of smoking ticking hesitating econobox JUNK that sold for thousands of dollars equal to or above retail was hilarious.

On a positive note, we picked up a good condition Subaru for pennies on the dollar.

Moral of the Story - if you want an SUV for cheap, go to the auction. Just dont expect to get anything that has a MPG of 20 or higher for under retail.
