Rebuilding the GF's Pickup (pics and such)

I just got finished with some engine work I was doing to my girl's 1994 K1500 Pickup.

Its still gotta be cleaned a TON, and some other parts will come off for a little cleaning up, and some paint.

It didnt run for a year, trashed transfer case, so it sat.

It so far has gotten:
Washed 2 times
New top end gaskets (heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, valve cover, EGR, Throttlebody)
New lifters
New ignition (coil, cap, rotor, wires, plugs)
New battery
New grounds
New transfer case
(cheapish) hedman headers
Short 18" glasspacks (its LOUD)
Fresh oil, 2 times
Fresh coolant
New Thermostat

When I started the engine bay looked like this: (I had already done the exhaust)

Took It all apart: (if you look close you can see theres TONS of crap below the intake manifold, got engine sludge? lol)

I dont have a shot with the heads off.

Intake manifold:

Started cleaning it up with a wire wheel:

Hit it with a little paint (along with the valve covers -- her favorite color is blue):

All back together:

I still need to clean up the engine bay a bit (tuck and tie up wires -- and the valve covers are 100% blue, thats just grease/grime on them), I was just excited to get it all together and running again. I am AMAZED at how it runs, I had a few timing issues at first, but they got sorted easy (installed the distributor 180 degrees backwards).... It runs like a brand new truck and it has 207xxx miles on it. SBC FTW!

Thats all for now, I gotta do some more research on a few other issues it has and get a few more parts for it. I thought it was going to be much more expensive and difficult to do, and no one in her family thought it was possible. It was a "lost cause" -- I would have left it for dead too(not enough free time for another project), but she loves it for some reason, so I rebuilt it for her.

Thought I'd post up on it cause, hell, I'm proud of it. .

Now it needs a stereo, mirrors, and fuel sending unit and possibly a quick repaint and its like brand new again.

C&C welcome

That is all.

I dropped the bolt in front of the battery some where, I CANT find it for the life of me. I will eventually grab another one, though. haha.

We're not to worried about the rust and everything, I will look over the frame, and suspension and replace anything that looks like its going to cause a problem. It isnt going to look "prestine" when its finished, the exterior, i can take pics, is in pretty good shape and theres not too much rust on it. Hell tho, its a rugged pickup, no need for it to be pretty .

Ive got more parts comming, brake lines, drums, shoes, hardware, wheel cylinders, ball joints, and fuel sending unit. (i forgot to mention the brakes are bad the the back)

I cant for the life of me find a mounting kit for a cd player for this truck... does anyone know where to look?

Thanks for the comments!

There's a 1994 Yukon that keeps kicking around our family (Dad's, then my brother's, then mine for a short bit, then back to my brother, then sold, then bought back by my brother) with 260K on the original TBI 5.7, that has never been torn down further than the intake. Starting to use oil a bit more frequently now, but I think 250K+ is more than reasonable.

They're out there, but difficult to find. If it's set up the same way as the '94 Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban, the HU will mount where the slave cassette/cd unit mounts, in the middle of the dashboard. You'll remove the master controller from the dash cluster and replace it with a cover provided in the kit. All else fails, order from Crutchfield.

I plan on using the center hole in the dash, I just need something to mount it and make it fit. The hole seems to wide to me, maybe its my eyes. Im tearing it out in a week or so and ill know for sure what i need then. I'll order from Crutchfield if need be, Im not fronting the money for the stereo, she is, so its all good

Thanks for the comments thus far.

250k+ is amazing for no rebuild. I dont think I needed to replace the parts I did, but I figured, better safe than sorry. As far as using the oil, it might just be valve guides, which is simple to fix on these motors.

Cheers

the install kit , replaces that whole center bezel , a/c vents need to get transfered from the stock bezel

also youll want to get a long back strap to support the back of the radio , as well as help with theft , since the bezel pops in and out very easy

The fact that my dad is a mechanic might help the longevity thing. I doubt it's ever gone longer than 4200 miles at a time between oil changes.

According to my brother, if the engine goes, something slightly juicer will take it's place.

My gf is anything but motor savvy, shes the reason things break usually. The way I see it, if this has stood up to her mechanical ignorance, then the motor is worth its weight in gold . I dont see any reason for this motor to die out anytime soon, I ran/drove it for about 500+miles after it sat, with no work other than fresh oil in it and recovered all the oil when I replaced it again after doing all the work (i dropped a bit of water down in it when i took off the intake mani).

Again, SBC FTMFW!
