Pretty amazing. That's how all advertisements should be. They tell you what they want you to think, and show you why you should think it. End of story.

Never mind the humor

seen it. love it. though i think pontiac should do this with their lineup. keep the G8, G6, and G5, LS3 in the G8 gxp, keep the G6 gxp the same, the G5 gxp should get th turbo 4 out of the cobalt. make a 2 door, LS7 G8 and call it the G8 GTO (the original GTO was just an option on a standard family car, why not stick to it's roots?), then take the new camaro and give it a new skin. then pontiac could have a commercial like that for the entire brand instead of just their newest car

Too bad an M5 would OWN a G8 GT. Even an M3 would own it.

I can't wait til the G8 GT hits the streets, but the only thing that irks me about that car is that fake nav screen. Why put a screen exactly where the nav screen should be, except have it display knightrider-esque visuals instead of navigation....

The post button owns me...

I wanted to say - M5/M3 owns the G8 in what respect? Price tag? In terms of performance the G8 GT and GXP clearly can hold their own. What will give it an edge will be the refinement. I, like many, are counting on pontiac to make this thing a real M5 killer in every repect. Yes it will never be a BMW, bla bla bla, but it should give america a true competitor in the RWD sport sedan segment

M5 = $83,000+
G8 GT = $30,000

You could buy 3 G8 GTs for the price of one M5 (or 2 G8 GTs for the price of one M3).
Seriously, who's owning who?

I plan on getting me a G8 GXP in a couple years, when they have been out a little bit and the bugs are worked, used of course because I hate taking hits on new cars

Gotta get my bike first

The bugs? What bugs, it comes from down under. This isn't a new car.

I'm holding off for the 6-Speed.

Yes, it does come from down under, but the chassis is semi-new and so is the engine, just as the GTO, it will have some things to be worked out from the first year

The six-speed will only be for the (expensive) GXP version, as far as GM has officially announced.

Uh, hello?
a G8 GT owns an "M"5!? You you guys being serious???

Dude what are you guys smoking? This ad was how the G8 spanks a REGULAR 5 Series. NOT an M5 morons, That simply won't happen...and NOT at under $30 grand.
It appears some of you need to take the "fanboy" ear plugs out...re-watch that video and this time pay attention to what they are saying. Get your models straight first THEN run your mouths. They NEVER once said this car is faster or better than the M edition anywhere in that video. And sorry Dave price doesn't make the G8 a better car than the M5, only more easily attainable.
I love the G8, I will own a G8 GXP with out a doubt. But pull up to any BMW 5 series you want, and laugh at them, except the "M" model or you'll end up looking like the kind of asshat kind of guy in a Cavalier laughing at a guy in a Vette.

What was the point of showing the pictures? Add wood... instant luxury? Really.
Both cars are about the same in dimensions, specs and sophisticated construction.

And for the rest of the world, they compare. Also the rest of the world sees BMW as everyday cars. It is only in North America that BMW's marketing team fools the shmos here into thinking that BMW is luxurious. You do know other countries uses BMW as taxis and police cars, right? Yhea, real luxury.

As for comparing the G8 to the M5, that is stretching, but the GXP should handle that one, if not... there is the CTS-v. G8 does compare favorably with the commuter 5-series.

BMW M5 is 500hp V10. But torque is ~ 360ftlbs. Yes it is a trend-setting sport sedan, but it does not "own" the GXP IMO. I really want to drive a USED G8 to determine the true quality of this thing before making a final judgement.

That's an excellent point. GM makes great "new" cars right now. But since they are new and appear to be built far better than GM cars of the past...their track record is not exactly perfect past the new car stage.
I think the last CTS was a very well built car. When i drove a new CTS & CTS-V It rode beautifully, felt solidly built, and the materials inside felt more upscale. I was sold.

Then i started looking at used ones. big difference. The paint on the navi/stereo controls were all wiped off leaving ugly white buttons, the solid feel was quite a bit degraded (i understand it's used, keep reading) and then there are all the problems I researched about like the axles that snapped and whatnot.

At the same time i was looking at CTS's a friend onf mine was looking at used BMW's He was looking for a 5 Series around 99 to about 2003'ish. He even looked at a few older e36 M3's around 1996 to 1997 (mostly M3 sedans). These cars aged nearly perfect, (I say "nearly" because a few of the decade old M3's had some electrical issues) as a matter of fact some of these cars were 10 years old or nearly that and they felt as solid as the brand new CTS's i looked at. So that had me wondering why a 3 or 4 year old cadillac (that's obviously newer) is so ratty used? My girlfriend had me go look at some used Hondas for her. Most of the Accords we drove were off lease cars (2 to 3 years old) and were also more solid and well aged than the (2 to 4 year old) CTS's I drove.

So, although i'm excited that GM is building better cars. Anyone can build great "new" cars...but sadly they don't stay new. BMW very obviously builds cars to last. Domestic automakers build them cheap and quick and make the parts fairly cheap to replace.
"easy to fix", That's what domestic automakers call reliable. But you know what oldskool? I think this car is one you won't have to worry about. It's been in OZ for a few years already and they so-far have a solid record. So maybe it will be the white horse GM is looking for. But only time will tell.

Seriously though, the ONLY thing I can give you on BMWs that are very good and long lasting, (infact ANY German car for the matter) is their chassis build, very sturdy and robust, the rest: garbage. After 3+ years of use, it will detriote like any car today, difference is you shelled a lot more upfront, then the rest.

I think everyone in this thread knows that.

-BUT I do beleive the GXP version will be competitive against the m5 with a price of less then half.
