anyone ever seen anything like this. this is my cousins cobalt he got the 2.4 na version. i m in afghanistan and he just sent me this pic im not really to sure about this one. im checking out the company now its called sts turbo systems
any help/guidance is appreciated
Unless I'm missing something, it looks like a remote mount turbo set up to me. I don't know much about them, so I can't comment otherwise.
Is there something specific you're commenting on?
ya it is a remote mount system..just wondering the reliability and actual gains compared to a normal setup. wondering f my cousin got ripped off. basically just trying to gather what i can about it
Im not fond of them, but alot of the turboed 4th gen f-body guys are running STS turbos due to the lack of room in the engine compartment.
No he didnt get ripped off. It'll still work, but im thinking at a efficently as if it was mounted on the exhuast manifold. Look that the RD Fabs truck, it has a "remote" turbo on it.

realistically you will loose a bit of pressure from the distance because its so far away from the motor. but, they run much cooler than a traditional turbo system, so a loss in one aspect leads to again in another.

Looks like the same Cobalt that was at the '05 bash judging by the setup and it's yellow.
if mr pute was still lurking around he would tell you that remote turbos work just fine, he didnt get ripped off

A lot of Vette's do this as well.
Not new technology at all. But is great for a racing application because of all the weight you save not needing an intercooler. As someone already said Vette guys use this quite a bit. Match that with Carbon fiber piping and you have wallop of power for half the weight as an underhood system.

Its about time STS stepped up and did more FWDs. They are most popular with 4th gen Fbodys.
As for weight savings on an intercooler....not much if any when you look at the xtra piping. The only thing I see with a rear mounted system is slight turbo lag and water if you drive in the rain.

no it is defintly a cobalt and yes he did but as i said im in afghanistan have been for over a year now and ive just never seen nething like this before so i was just curious. thanks for th info guys

if you look there is no struts inside of the springs , and if you look at the rear bumper shape its a cobalt

that engine pic is not the 2.4.....thats a 2.2 base model. (same engine most of the 3rd gen cavs had) The 2.4 is VVT, and a lot of fun to tune I hear...

i get my 2.4 tuned this spring i cant wait!! haha at it sits now it put down 170WHP and 165wtrq. i drove a 2000 toyota 4 runner with a STS turbo it sat right under the drivers side rear door, it looked stupid because everyone could see it and it was still slow as hell.
Whitegoose: Because the Turbo has to pressurize a bit more air, it doesn't have to sink as much heat. It's a good thing
Evol: Carbon Fibre piping? Why not just use Aluminum?

Pressure loss is not a big deal. The only real problem with the remote mounts is turbo lag. Turbo lags sucks.

there is talks of a STS system for the colorados also though colorados have plenty of engine bay room

actually thats not as big a deal as you would think either. people tend to forget how much air turbos can push. and other then a real low rpm pull (where your going to get lag anyway) its pretty damn hard to tell the difference. espically on a mid to high rpm down shift your pipes are charged almost instantly.
