Nissan, Chrysler strike deal for truck, car
By BRADFORD WERNLE, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS

Under an expanded product sharing alliance announced on Monday, April 14, Chrysler LLC will become Nissan's full-sized pickup truck manufacturer, while Nissan will make subcompacts for Chrysler.

The agreement means Nissan will stop making its Titan pickup when Chrysler starts making Nissan-badged trucks in 2011.

In exchange, Chrysler will get a Nissan-based small car, built at Nissan's Oppama, Japan, factory to Chrysler's own design starting in 2010. The new car is destined for North America, Europe and other global markets.

The Nissan-based small car will be built on a new Nissan platform to an already-completed Chrysler design, according to Chrysler co-President Tom LaSorda. He declined to say whether the design would be based on the Dodge Hornet concept car.

LaSorda said the deal will have no impact on its ongoing venture with Chinese carmaker Chery Automobile Co. The two companies continue to work jointly on products for North America and other markets, he said.

"At some point we believe we need more than one small car," for North America, LaSorda said. "We would be counting on Chery to provide that."

The Nissan-based small car will be built on a new platform.

Chrysler will make the Nissan pickup for Nissan at its Saltillo, Mexico, factory. To make room for the Nissan product, Chrysler will shift Dodge Ram production to its St. Louis North and Warren, Mich., truck plants. LaSorda said heavy duty production would likely be shifted to St. Louis North, while light duty production could easily be shifted to Warren. The Chrysler-built Nissan pickup will go on sale in North America in 2011.

In January, the two companies announced Nissan would supply Chrysler with a Versa-based sedan for sale in South America starting next year.

"Forging the right tactical partnerships is critical to the long-term success of Chrysler," said LaSorda in a prepared statement.

The companies said they "have also agreed to maintain an open dialogue to explore further product-sharing opportunities," according to a Chrysler press release.

LaSorda declined to discuss financial details of the agreement except to say that Chrysler would pay Nissan for vehicles the latter builds and vice versa.

The Titan is 100x's better a truck that the Ram. Outside of the big diesels
Big mistake.

nissan should just borrow the Cummings motor technology, and forget any other part of the Ram.

My thoughts exactly Jooky... this just sounds like a nother way to ourcource production and be cheap on more @!#$ by Cry-sler.

I say @!#$ em, I hope they end up folding in the next few years, they've been a piss poor car company since Lee Iacocca walked away from them again.

the problem is the titan doesnt sell nearly as much as the ram. other than the pathfinder, nissan doesnt seem to be able to build a truck that people want to buy. maybe the overhead costs are too high, i dont really know, but you see alot more rams and dakotas than titans, frontiers, and x trails combined.

also, dodge doesnt own the cummins technology. cummins is a separate company, dodge was just smart and secured them early on in life as cummins is probably the best diesel motor you can buy whether its in a truck, generator, or something else.

i'd have to say nissan wins and dodge loses on this one. a dodge built nissan will have the nissan name on it and probably sell decent. a nissan built dodge still gets stuck with a dodge name that nobody will be interested in.

GO PATS!!!

Chrysler=garbage

They by far make the crappiest disposable cars & trucks ever. Chrysler is the company that gives domestic car makers the bad rap. They build garbage car & trucks, dress them up all pretty, claim they are technologically advanced. Then POOF! if you own them longer than a 3 year lease they completely blow-up and fall apart. Look at any used GM or Ford pick-up next to the same year Ram and they just don't hold up as well. I see alot more used 10 year old (1997) GM & Ford Pick-ups on the road still running and working than i do 1997 Ram's.

Nissan is making a HUGE mistake here. They are finally getting some respect again from consumers. And building excellent vehicles, invinting this pile of dung company to play with them is like BMW asking Yugo to build them a car. Nissan better take a long hard look at Chryslers last partnership (Mitsubishi) the shared technology on how to build peice of sh*t cars almost put Mitsubishi out of business, and the stigma that they build crappy cars still plauges Mitsubishi's bottom line. People are staying away, they can't give away Eclipses these days. 10 years ago DSM's were they're best seller.

This could be Nissan's future if they invite these turds into their world.

i beg to differ about chrysler's build quality. i've owned several chrysler products and have had zero problems, none, nada. The worst of the big three? not hardly. take a look at ford lately? other than the escape they have nothing.they discontinued the best selling car, the taurus, then they bring it back totally redesigned and turns to be a major flop. The f150 was the toughest truck on the planet but just isn't what it used to be nowadays.and for the mustang, all 1,000 versions of it, well i won't go there.......

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

This totally blows. I was finally starting to like Chrysler again, and what? They go and pull this crap. I really thought after the split from Benz they'd become what they used to be. A freaking American company! But no. Let's build trucks for a god awful Japanese company and let them and some POS Chinese company build our cars...

Oh, and trucks haven't been real trucks since the seventies.
