should i...?

i have a chance to get an rx7. cheap. ridiculously cheap. i have not seen the car, but the guy said its the first year of the rounded body style, which puts it at about a 92 i believe... one of the rotors has no compression, no big deal, my cavalier was completely seized when i bought it. pricetag: $500. would it be worthwhile?

Are you sure its that same style? The 1st gens are rounded too, and more befitting of a $500 price tag.

If it is a 3rd Gen then hell yes you better get that @!#$!

what are the generation years on these cars?

-edit

regardless, $500 for a rotary car... as a side project.. i dont really see how i can go wrong. how well do the trans hold up on these cars?

maybe i dont know enough about the rotary engine, but if one of the chambers has no compression isnt there a good chance that the entire engine may be damaged?

Good chassis for an LS1

exactly. even if it is damaged, an ls swap would be next on the agenda. and a worn apex seal can cause a no compression state.

1st gen 1979 - 1985
2nd gen 98-92
3rd 93-98

Both the 2nd and 3rd gens make bitchin ls1 swap cars, hell even just an older sbc would be cool. Or ideally you could do a 3 rotor swap which would be the coolest of all.

so basically, if the body's straight, 500 isnt bad?

I'd have to say that's a damn desirable price

If the chassis is in good shape, DO IT!!! LS1 swap could be done rather cheaply too, then BOOM! Awesome weekend play toy.

Are you looking for stock, or aftermarket?

And I still vote LS1 swap.

An FC? DO IT DO IT DO IT! They look awesome, and I'm sure you could find a way to swap in an LS series or a new rotary. After all, it's all just a bunch of pieces of metal. If they don't fit right the first time, make them.

went and looked at it today, even started it. the body (black) is a second gen, straight as an arrow. its cleaner than my cavalier which has never been in an accident. the only rust i could find was on the metal power moonroof, which looks to be surface cancer, easy as hell to repair. the engine bay: no oil on anything. the aluminum parts are a little pitted, but again, my cavalier aluminum looks the same way. ran good, but the guy told me one of the apex springs sometimes sticks and it stumbles. the interior: at first look, it seemed dated. when i touched anything, there was a deep layer of dust that revealed an interior that was intact. the seats have had covers on them their whole lives, the carpet looked barely worn. it has power everything... it has the factory wheels, with decent (albeit dryrotted) rubbers that were still holding air. he has a spare intake (box and manifold) and pair of coils. im thinking it'll be a good deal.

Sounds good.

If you want to mess with the Wankel rotaries, they're a good option and for $500 + new tires you really can't go wrong.

And if the apex-seals are sticking, it's just time to pop out the engine and put new ones in (I don't remember the Wankels too well, but there's no apex springs as I remember).

apex seals not springs to my knowledge. Just buy a new motor don't bother trying to put one together they a real pita,

the seals are sprung. so yes, it has seals, but they're on springs. i've found complete rebuild kits (gaskets, seals, springs, etc...) for roughly $900 shipped, which for something as rare as this, i didnt think was too bad.

linky for proof of sprung seals. parts numbers 31 and 32.

also, i suppose i should say, this will be replacing the cav as my only car. i cant keep two car, no room, and insurance in new jersey is uber-ridiculous. so, in general, can these cars be fast AND dependable? even if not, when the rotary goes, it'll get a swap.

wouldn't be free, but the short throw, toyos, headlights, corners, subs are getting sold. looking to get about $1500 to $2k for the car... its got a new clutch, two new tires, new brakes all around, completely rebuilt less than 30k mies ago... i'd rather someone on here get it so i knew it was going to someone who'll keep up with the maintenance schedule.
