Alright, I'm trying to talk my buddy into the Cobalt over a Miata. I know there are a LOT of people here with experience with both cars, so let's here what you have to say about them.
I'd like whatever you can shell out, but I really need extra info on:
A) road noise
B) known reliability issues
C) ride comfort
D) fit & finish
TIA

The Miata is a better car across the board.
The fact that you are trying to convince him otherwise because of your own bias makes you a horrible friend.

Well, except the road noise. It is a vert after all.
I've driven both, had an SS as a demo car (I sold chevys). The Cobalt is faster, and has more room. The Miata is more fun, hndles better, more precise steering (very responsive, I truned way to hard on the 1st quick turn)

You would think the debate would be a Kappa/Miata decision.
The real kicker for the choice.
If it's his only car, getting a Miata would be a pain in the ass. I would not drive a Solstice if it were my only car.

Exactly. I loved my Miata, but after owning one i know that i would never own one again as my only car. I'd say if speed and the need for a back seat are his only concerns go SS. If he wants a quality built, fun, peppy car with unreal handling the miata is the best choice of the 2.
Not to mention the miata runs on regular unleaded, The SS on premium. With talk of the gas prices reaching $4.00 a gallon this summer you'd have to REALLY need that speed to want an SS. And the last + for the Miata. Mazda is offering a $199 a month lease on Miata Sports right now. I'm getting one at the end of this month...mostly because i have a Suzuki Sidekick for winter and/or if i need more room.

I'm trying to get him in the Cobalt for other reasons. I'd like nothing more than to throw a Miata around the corners, but it is not practical for him at all.
1) He's a big guy. A 240sx is too small, I don't see how he fits in a Miata...
2) It's a convertible. That means future problems and extra road noise.
3) He has a tendency to pour money into mods just to end up selling the car and losing the money. FWD means he will always be traction-limited, so there's no point in pouring much into it. I see the Miata being a complete money pit.
4) He already has a '92 Civic race car project (about half-way done), and a class 5 Baja bug. It's time for something more practical. This car will be replacing a practically stock '92 Si.

He doesn't like the Solstice exterior, and he doesn't like the Sky interior...I dunno, but that option has aparently been thrown out (he criticized the 'fit and finish' as well).

ok. what is he using the car for and what does he want or need out of it? he might be big, but if he is ok with an uncomfortably tight fitting car, that's his perogative. If he does want the miata because it has more potential for modding, better mods available, better handling, better styling, or whatever other reasons, then he has every right to get one. why dont you tell him to go test drive each, see which he has more fun in and can see himself driving more. i mean realy, it shouldnt be left to what he reads and what his friends tell him. you cant buy a car without a test drive, plain and simple. wtf is he doing telling other people to pick a car for him, or taking other peoples personal opinions anyway? from the sounds, he knows how to work on cars, and might have a bit of knowledge on vehicles to make his own damn decisions.
this almost sounds like he has a friend who is die-hard about domestics trying to talk him out of a japanese car...
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Tell him to get a 1999-2005 miata. The new ones are extremely ugly, no matter how nice inside and how quick. I drive a 97 miata and it's seriously the best little car I've driven. I had a cobalt as a rental for a few days and it's just awful. The interior on my 11 year old car is WAY better than that of the cobalts. The top on my car has never had to be replaced and still looks mint. The car lasts forever and is just so much more fun to drive.
Miata > Cobalt any day
I can turbo my car and still get 25-30 mpg. 2200 pounds stock and 265 rwhp with the right turbo kit for less than the junky cobalt? Come on!

MX-5 > Cobalt.
You can get a folding hardtop on the MX-5 too.

If you're looking for practicality, frankly, I wouldn't choose either. If you've got a you "fun" car, why get another car you'll be tempted to mod. Try and convince him to get something thats completely un-redeemable as a performance platform if you want him to keep it unmodded and practical. If I was willing to finance another car, I'd get a 2nd gen Miata as Alex suggested over a Cobalt SS/SC any day. Now, a new SS Turbo? That might be a different story

Agreed on kappa vs miata for the real debate... If the guy wants a roadster and he can afford the price and the impracticallity, why offer up a cobalt to him? Even a solara covertable, or even a J convertable is a more comprable AND more practical choice (some cargo room and FWD as you suggested with the cobalt).
Also, as mentioned, he needs to test drive the damn things...
miata and pep , LMAO
maybe a speed model , for fun on the track the miata , daily driver = driver is gay
Have you ever driven a miata? I drive one daily and pep is a fantastic way to describe it.

yup ive driven the 1.6's and 1.8's , gotta say my sisters old LSi metero had the same pep
[quote=97cavie24ls(™)]yup ive driven the 1.6's and 1.8's , gotta say my sisters old LSi metero had the same pep
Thats a bit excessive...for the 1.8 for example your talking 140hp and 125tq in 2300lbs of roadster. It's not a rocket, but metro is an unfair comparison. It's been mentioned that with forced induction, your talking about a legitimately fast car...
But this is all kind of irrelevant to the threadstarter's point of view - road noise, reliability, comfort, fit and finish are the comparison points. But it seems like you are trying to save him from himself by use of the phrase money pit. Why a cobalt ss/sc? If you are trying to get him to save money go with a yaris, spectra, fit, echo, versa, accent...ect. The list of practical, economical cars with a better fit and finish than a convertable is expansive, but it doesn't start at cobalt ss/sc...

wow on top of everything else you are saying in here making a tool. are you REALY going to be one of those people to say the type of car someone drives makes them "gay" or some other completely immature comparison? REALY dude? grow the fuk up.

As un PC as he is being, there is no question that the Miata, or Solstice for that matter, is NOT a "masculine" car.
You can't win really. If you drive a yellow vette, people are thinking something else. Car=image in North America. Is there really anything wrong with having the courage or honesty to say it out loud. I would hope that a person, of alternative lifestyle, would be comfortable enough to not be insulted.
ha, yeah great point you have there. i mean, if i drove a "girl" car then i wouldnt realy worry about people thinking that. but seriously, how mature is it to consider certain types of vehicles for certain types of people? Well im male so i cant drive a miata or a solstice. Ahhh crap im white, i cant drive an old impala or a cadillac. oh shoot, just realized im not a granola, guess i cant drive a hybrid. im straight! cant drive a prius. geez.

It's just the way people are. Don't kid yourself, any new car's marketing plan is certainly just as specific.
I drive a Solstice. To hell with what people think. I have done 20 years plus time with the wife to prove that I have no balls at all. With her being such a pain in my ass, I might as well switch teams. lol.
bahhahahahaha time to trade in the solstice for a blue prius? lol

most of the miatas i see on the road , all have that tel tale IM GAY attached to them , yes that wonder clan called the rainbow crew
gay's and women are the 2 biggest buyers of the car , and id even say the same will happen for the solstice
for racing they are a great car and economical to get into and go racing , as well as being reliable , they were the best car for all kinds of grass routes racing , now they have the solstice/sky to deal with , but they still win hands down for being the lowest $$$$ , cause there is a bazillion of um out there , i like the car from a enthusiasts point of view
and i was being a little pc , i coulda said alot worse , but no matter how i said it , it still doesnt take away the fact that the majority of people out would still think its ladies car , or belongs to someone that is gay , more than they would think the car was owned by a straight guy
the cobalt is a kids play toy , or old person car , i dont think it really needed to be said

The largest demographic of Miata owners are old white men in their 50s.
In regards to the Solstice and Sky - nice cars, but they do not compare to the Miata.
As for everyday practicality ... buy a GS model with TCS and DSC, Hard top, and throw on a set of winters. Done and done. Ideal? No. Can it be done without compliant? Yes. I'd also wager such a setup would do better than a Cobalt in similar weather conditions.
