My corolla, what to do?
Friday, March 21, 2008 3:03 PM
For a year now, I've owned a brand new Corolla CE. The car is nice, and it does a decent job of keeping itself in good repair, but lately, I've become bored with the stock feel. For a few hundred dollars, I could give it a bit of life, but my wife doesn't want to do anything with it to make it too powerful for her, and doesn't want it lowered because of the snow in winter. So I browsed a few online vendors and came up with this package that might make it a little more fun for me:

Energy suspension motor mount inserts
Hotchkis sway bar set
Fujita Short ram intake
Vibrant axle back exhaust (neither this or the intake will bugger up the mileage)
DC sport headers (a maybe, depends on cash flow)
Vibrant strut tower bar

A few basic bolt ons, and a little suspension work, with no changes to ride height (keep the wife quiet), and no real damper on mileage. Any suggestions/comments? Unfortunately, I wouldn't have money for rims, and don't want to blow my budget on rims and tires since I'm going to have to get winter tires mounted in September or October when the snow flies.

Drop it 1.5 inches, she won't notice trust me.

Okay, my advice is this:

First, don't bother with the other stuff until you get BETTER TIRES. Once you get that done, do the suspension mods like the Sway bar and STB, and then the intake/exhaust. You won't gain much, but you will gain a little.

When you decide to go with a drop, going with 1-15" will not really add more to the snow-plow abilities already in the car.

Other than that, try cleaning the injectors with a bottle of STP black and a couple of STP white, and maybe try freshening up the oil with a good synthetic, and changing the rest of the fluids while you're at it (trans, brake, rad). After that, other than what you've already done, you're going to want to consider lightening your drivetrain/weight or adding power. I'd go with the former (lighter Wheels, flywheel, ditch the rear seat if you want to go to the track).

1.5"... I believe a 15" drop would be a little noticeable.

I mean, you'd be about 7-8" under ground.

get a good set of tires, Hotchkis sway bar set and springs and you will love it... a small drop like the hotchkis wont make the car extremely low... the corolla is a 4x4 to start with lol

i wouldn't bother with any engine mods with this car they don't really yield good results at all
trust me put all your money into suspension it will make you smile a lot more then any power mod you could do to that car

you could also go with trd springs instead of the hotchkis. the trd springs are only 1.25" drop and trust me you wouldn't have any scraping problems with them

as gutless as the car is a little performance will make the car more fun

and its not gonna be to much for her , youll maybe see 10-20hp more , and its not like the car has 400hp to start with

20 HP would be a huge gain considering the car only has 126 HP to start with. ~15.8% according to Windows Calculator. But it still wouldn't be more than a stock 2.2L out of a current model 'Balt, so that wouldn't be too bad.

Unless you go custom turbo or juice the thing, she'll barely notice any difference.

IMO, stick to some nice lightweight rims, a new exhaust maybe (check out TRD), new intake, but that's it...
