Anyone got one?I know their fairly dependable trucks/suv's and all.Just wondering if doing this is worth it.
See story below if you like to read some or some cliff notes at the bottom
I have been looking at blazer's for quite some time since i wrecked my J.I found one a few months ago in need of a new front end and a windshield. Since i have a buddy that know's his way around blazer's pretty well owning two of them and having to rebuild the front end on the one more than once,i was going to pick it up.Well that blazer was sold when i emailed the guy about it.
I hang out with this guy on a regular basis and were good friends. He gets a call from this lady about buying her blazer. It's a 1995 LT if i'm not mistaken(its a 4 door model). Not sure of the mileage. But it's in fairly good condition inside and out.It will need tires since the lady is taking them. The 4wd works, tranny is in good order and everything else is good.Except one thing. The motor is ready to good.Don't know what it is,but they were smart and parked it when it started acting up.
So my buddy tells me he will sell me the motor out of his 1997 blazer, the 4.3 vortec.Same as what's in the 95.So i can get the 95 for 300 from the lady and the motor for 100 from my buddy.Plus other odds and ends for it.i'm looking at around 6-800 bucks for a good blazer.
Think it's worth it?
Buy blazer for 300 with bad engine and no wheels.Buy engine from buddy for 100.Plus his wheels.Buddy helps me get it running right and fixed up nice.New truck for around 800 bucks

i know guys that do this kinda stuff all the time and turn around n sell em for more. as long as everything is in decent shape and you think its worth it. only thing i dont like about my blazer (4.3) is the gas mileage. i say go for it

They do get terrible gas mileage.I got used to bad mileage driving my dad's f150 around.
It's all in pretty good shape and we have a donor blazer so.I posted on a blazer forum and they say it can be done.Just lots of work, like a motor swap with a J.

same deal. love my blazer, hate the gas mileage, but not enough to get rid of it. no major probs yet. mind you it only has 40 000kms on it, so its next to new. front end parts are weak on them though, and can add up in cost in a hurry. and transmissions can be another weak point....just food for thought
Check Cardomain for PICS
i say go for it.
i really liked my blazer... its a good truck..my parents own it now and its still going strong at 189k lol.
they do get really crappy gas mileage though.. it got worse then my Ls1 trans am... so your looking at 14-16 mpg on a good day
i put a k&n filter and a flowmaster 40 on, and it gets 17-18 mpg. it was getting about 14-15 before

My buddy was telling me the same thing.
He has borla duals that he will let me have and a intake to up the milage.
I'm still not sure if i want to attempt the crazy undertaking of a motor swap.

I had a 99 Blazer LS and it was awesome, except the gas mileage.
I put a 2" suspension lift on it with some larger tires. (Dont know the tire size)
Until a couple months ago when some kid decided he was going to drive stupid and total it for me.
I'm buying it,fixing it up nice with my buddy and selling it.Then i get to buy a Z finally

I had a 4.3 in my 1500 i loved that thing bad gass milage is a given for that motor though. i miss it.
my friend just got rear ended in his GMC jimmy (same thing pretty much) the guy hit him at 45mph and didnt even touch the brakes. my friend was stopped waiting for a turn signal arrow when it hit him.... the jimmy is totalled, but he walked away and other than the back half missing, he is just a little sore, so they have my vote for the safety pick... he always complains about his gas mileage though... lol
Yeah, the milage sucks, get ready to do the lower ball joints, and have fun with the tranny slipping. Other then that I love my blazer. Oh yeah, and some new weather stripping around the doors and the rear hatch. Oh, and the recline adjustment lever snaps off. oh, and if you want new rear speakers have fun. When you put the motor in it, that whirring and clicking noise is normal. oh, and throw new plugs in before you put the motor in, you will thank me when you see where the steering shaft is. Other then those things I love my blazer, and other then getting stuck in the mud a couple of times it hasn't let me down. Its never left me stranded in the snow, and it always starts.
I do plan on replacing lots of the OEM gaskets, like the head and intake mani.I hear the ball joints go out alot, but it is a 95 with a bit of milage on it so they prolly already went.May just do them anyhow.
I'm swapping the motor and tranny from a junkyard so i'll have a 30 day warranty if anything goes south.
My buddy has beat his blazer into the ground time and time again.Only needing little things and would be still running if he didn't put it into a tree and cut the top off.I've been in it while it has been jumped, done donuts for hours and just been in the mud all day and it still kept going.
Sure the gas mileage sucks but I've got a job and nothing else to spend money on
