What do you guys think of saturn new compact the Astra.
(It really just a opel like the rest of saturn anymore.)
I like what I've seen, although I've not been able to see one in person because they were delayed and haven't arrived yet. Lots of features, at a great price. I think it is very good looking too.
i wish it had the 260hp turbo 2.0 , or a turbo diesel
yes its a opel , badged as a saturn
I thought it was going to be good until I sat in one a few weeks ago. Yuck. I liked it way less in person.
I test drove one.
Handles nice, brakes well, takes turns OK. Absolutely Zero low end grunt. Once it gets moving it is peppy. Apparently it gets good gas mileage.
Overall, not that impressed for 22K CND (w/ Air Conditioning, power, and Auto Trans). Would be much more impressed if it was UNDER 20K with those features.
Yeah, you can get a Cobalt LT with more HP, a prettier looking (in my opinion) coupe bodystyle and (suprisingly) better MPG, for 18 grand in Canada. The Cobalt with the 2.2 Ecotec gets 1mpg more for highway driving than the Astra with it's 1.8 and has identical numbers for city. People forget that if you don't have enough power in a heavy car your MPG will suffer because there's not enough torque to pull it and the engine has to struggle, which uses lots of gas.
i liked it in its time. now its desperately screaming for a redesign. My uncle has an 06 i believe, or 05, not sure.... and its the exact same thing as the new 08's. i hope it gets a makeover, then i might consider getting one.

They just went on sale here in the US this year. Are you thinking of the ION?
no, its the astra. its been out in mexico for a few years already.
btw, its actually badged as a chevy over there, but its the same thing, only difference is the grille/emblems
yup astra has been around for a while , just the first year in the US
i keep seeing a chevy from mexico i wish we would get , its a turbo'd sedan , droooooooollllll
It's not entirely like the astra--it doesn't offer a 1.6l powerplant
.
It seems like every car out here now I see with a US ounterpart, the engine is smaller, runs on LPG, or is a turbo diesel.
The vectras out here (Epsilon platform--same as the G6) certainly don't come with the Ly7 engine...i don't even think they come in a V6.

This Astra/Delta platform has been out since 1991 and updated in 1998 and 2004. The Saturn Astra has the updated cosmetic design that came out for Opel last year.
It is probably the best GM has to offer in the compact class and I welcome it. Personally, if it came with CDTi I would right the check now.
I had no complaints other then the AC is optional at it's price.
Somebody mention the MPG is better then on the Cobalt. Blame that on shorter gear ratio, they have a Honda-eqe drive feel to it.

[quote=97cavie24ls(™)]i wish it had the 260hp turbo 2.0 ,
the thing i found funny when i was reading the news paper size brochure GM sent me on the astra , it showed the 5dr weighing less than the 3dr by 14lbs
138hp and 125tq , isnt to bad(still better than the LN2) and weight was in the mid 2700 range
I was really into them, until I realized that they came with a 1.8 Ecotec... why? Why not a 2.4, or at least a 2.2? It's not like it would cost GM any more money to put in a bigger engine, they already have them developed and in production. Just slap that bad boy in there. I can't imagine the fuel economy difference between a 1.8 and a 2.2 to be more than maybe 1 or 2 mpg. I dunno, at least put the bigger engine in the 3-door, since that's the "sporty" model.
And the interior is ugly, too.
im sure that they will sometime but they probley want to see how the US likes it first.

Probably something to do w/ being a opel.

If I'm not mistaken, the Opel is offered with a 2.0 turbo in Europe.
^^
I think its a different 2.0 tho.

Do they use the 2.2 eco in Europe? Maybe it is not readily available in Belgium where the Astra is assembled.
I was also reading that they wanted the car on the market ASAP and so made next to no changes, except the addition of a cupholder, which it does not come with elsewhere, and the bumpers / bumper covers.
just drove the auto 3dr xr tonight not bad for a econo car , i got to 110mph from on-ramp to off-ramp , car is very stable and brakes very well , stereo sounds good , needs a sub though
over all for the market its in , its gonna be a great car , id buy 1 for a DD , not sure if id get a auto or 5spd , but id toss a turbo on it though
The difference with europe is that thier lowest grade of gas is 95 octane. It's likley why my g/f's dad's older astra with the 1.6l in it seems like it has acceptable power to it. Most likley their engines are designed to run on that high of octane most efficiently.

I would expect the power to be acceptable. But I'm not in the acceptable power levels market. A car with slightly above average power can get you out of predicaments just as well as a decent set of brakes.
I had no idea that 95 was the lowest in Europe. That is certainly one of the reasons the fuel is more expensive there.
I have not done any digging into the future plans for this car, but I would be suprized if a redline version won't be offered. They will just wait for the buzz of the cars introduction to wear off before they market it.
Though, i did hear that europe calculates octane differently, so 95 is about 92-93 here.
Still, at $6/gal equivalent, most people will go for less power for better milage, or even better yet over there, LPG cars or Diesels.

As my gf says to me, 'Who the hell buys a Saturn anyways?".. Pure junk.
