Got this off another forum. Pictures and story are on very first page.

Cliff notes: Guy buy blown C6 vette. Wants it even more faster. Guy takes vette to place called CAM to have work done. A mechanic finishes the work, joy rides the car, and then totals it. Now shop doesn't want to pay for it.

The owner of CAM posted on Pg 14.

My thoughts: Lawyer first, and shut the hell up.

accidents happen. he said he offered and she declinded... what more does she want? its extremely sad for the vette owner, but it sounds like the owner of CAM tried to make it right?

i had a friend back in high school that had a shop do a b16 swap in his crx... when the guy finished the swap, he was taking it on a test drive to make sure everything was ok.. a guy ran a stop sign and he hit him. totalled my friends car. got 3500 back. think he bought it back for like 200 bucks.

A buddy of mine had his new Corsa exhaust put on his vette with 2000km on it. The shop's test drive on cold tires proved to be an issue. Of 25,000 dollars in repairs. The employee actaully took off and tried to pretend he didn't do it, leaving the Vette on the street. The police actually called my buddy before the shop ever bothered.

My buddies insurance had to pay.

Similar to what happened to my Monte Carlo back in '97. I got into an accident and took it to this one dealership that my insurance company recommended to have the fender & front bumper replaced and their body shop porter took it out for a joyride after washing it and blew the transmission. Didn't bother to tell me and as soon as I took it off their lot I noticed the tranny wouldn't shift into 2nd so I went back and asked them what happened and they gave me a bunch of BS lines and said I must have just did something to it and was trying to make them pay etc... Didn't help that they had the standard boilerplate BS in fine print stating 'We are not responsible for any damge to vehicle while it is on our grounds'. I wanted to sue them into the ground but since the car was in my dads name and he didn't want to deal with lawyers and courts I was out of a car for a while. Karma got my revenge for me though, it turns out the body shop manager and one of his lackeys was commiting insurance fraud by supposedly ordering new parts when in reality he was getting used parts from a local junkyard and pocketing the extra money, they got fired didn't see any jailtime though.

His offer was for her to get the work done at his shop.

I would not want his shop to touch my car either after that stunt.

John H, the problem was insurance was going to pay for a STOCK car. This was by no means a stock car. Then he would have to repurchase the mods and the shop owner said they would do the work on it for free. It seems to me that a lot of the mods would still be good. I don't know the whole story on if anything in the engine bay was messed up though. Seems to me that they could let insurance purchase a new car. The shop should buy the wrecked car back from the insurance and take the parts off and put them on the new vette. However, I sure as hell wouldn't want that shop doing any work on my car after that.

Yea I've heard of a lot of Body Shops that joy ride in people's cars. I had to get my rear painted after the bumper rear conversion and to keep the abuse of my car at bay lol, I burned a special "Paint Shop Tune" on the car with hpt in the parking lot before I handed over the keys. lol Basically rev limited to 3 grand and fuel cut out at 25 mph....if you work in a body shop there shouldn't be a reason for you to 1. even take my car on the road . 2. To go faster than 25 mph and 3000 rpms if you just pulling my car in and out of a bay.

HPT FTW!

It's a catch 22 for shops.

I used to have to test customer cars . I dreaded the faster rides because it meant that I would have to drive relatively hard in order to make sure the vehicle was running to expectation. I certainly never abused a customer car, but if the complaint was a miss over 6000rpm, i really had no choice. I simply could not run every car on the dyno. Nor would most customers pony up for it. To be honest, I was more worried about losing my licence. I have witnessed abuse, and most was at new car dealers.

Even putting an exhaust on justifies a test run. If the customer wants in done right, it's got to be run, and run relatively hard. You never to get the motor rockin' in order to make sure things don't pull apart or even just rattle against something.

It seems to me that this shop owner took a reasonable effort to remedy. Possibly even generous.

I know, everyone thinks that a stranger touching your car is worse than that stranger taking your girl ITB. Get a grip. If you want to toy with your car, it's gonna get hurt at some point. Accidents happen. One did here, and it seems to me that the owner is taking it personally. They should have given the shop a chance to remedy. Instead, it's ratstyle.

Ask anyone in a GM shop what they think of the average Vette driver. lol.

We don't even test customers cars at our shop nor would we ever lend them out for a weekend. The customer comes to us and tests drives and we ride along to verify a problem if there is one. That simply is just very very sad...

Did I miss something.? The car was out with the staff member for the weekend? If that is the case, I may not have the same opinion.

However, it is not uncomon for a vehicle to go with a tech for a matter of time. I have asked mechanics to take a vehicle home to see if they can repeat the condition. I have taken them home myself. Sometimes it takes time or a comparable situation to provoke an issue. There are many issues that are not always repeatable when the car comes in and most customers would rather have the issue resolved over multiple trips to the shop. My customers were always aware that the vehicle would be driven and the repair or modification confirmed.
