Anyone else thinking this is a redo of 1971?
I mean, you have CAFE standards that are killing the V8 Performance vehicles even though they're about 4000 times more efficient than they were even 20 years ago... Oil prices are making it harder and harder to have a vehicle that's fun to drive because you need to re-mortgage your home in order to buy a tank of gas...
So... that just leads me to wonder when the government is going to drop speed limits again.

when i first started driving, the highway i drove most on was 55 mph and went up to 65 like a year or two after
that was only 10 years ago
I wonder how many times the cycle has repeated itself. Did steam power go throughthe same BS. No question, someone is getting richer.
It's silly to attack the sports and grand touring car. They realy can get great milleage. A person driving an SUV alone is the real jerk.

I've NEVER worn bellbottom jeans.... those are just plain wrong unless they're being shed by very hot woman, and in no other circumstance.
The 70's were cool to a point, but the latter part was hallmarked by watered down (at best) or washed out (mostly) cars with no power and spongy handling. I mean, we've got George W Bush (another Nixon, but worse), record prices for fuel (if you look at what it costs for fuel now, it's about even), and new environmental crises popping up left and right.
What prompted this line of thought:
- Stan Meyer had claimed to have made a working prototype for his water-powered dune buggy, and had said his goal was to make it a $1500 conversion. However, something tells me that it would have been a DISASTER if that had become a reality, because we're so conditioned to having Easy access to cheap/reliable energy, that we'd likely end up with water hoarding because we're too stupid as a group to learn to conserve first, and look for answers to our own problems
- The prices on the oil commodity market are getting STUPID. Unmoderated prices are maximizing profits for oil companies (I'm sorry, but $40 billion a year of clear profits for 7 straight years is quite enough when you consider costs to extract and refine have gone up less than 15% over those same 7 years). And please don't insult my intelligence by saying there is no collusion between fuel companies (there should be a variation of about 20% in prices, but there's less than 2% in most any given area)
- Cars are being made safer than ever before and we're paying a premium for that safety, but there is a new wave of imports from countries with low safety and manufacturing standards... Chances are, these countries' cars will either just make the safety bar, or will lobby to get it lowered. We'll do this in the interest of trade and moving money: and we'll ultimately see these cars start killing people. I'm talking about Mexico and China here.

as i was driving home last night i was thinking about this. we can only hope that the govt wont try and lower the national speed limit again because its @!#$ty enough when i enter a state that has a limit of 65. i couldnt imagine trying to go a state or two away with 55 being the limit.
and what would poor lenko do when he comes to the bash? it would take him an extra week to drive it all!

I agree though, the bubble has to burst sometime. I think the difference this time is a culture of American idiots that would rather bend over for high prices than to go through another rationing crisis. It is proven that is one of the only things that will lower prices, and I can say for sure that this culture of ne'er do-withouts won't drop their demand much.
If there's another round of insane inflation and outrageous interest rates (like in the 80's) I'ma be one happy bitch.

I agree. Some city planners really need to rethink urban sprawl before puting their stamp of approval on projects.
I've been thing the same thing GAM. The 55mph thing doesn't really bother me it didn't stop toledoans from speeding then and if the speed limit reverted back to it it wouldn't stop them now, though I have noticed more people are doing the speed limit these days.
The JOYS of $3 per Gallon fuel, eh?
