05 Altima 2.5 S

Well, after you buys shot down the Jetta and some other car the GF was looking at (she seems to trust your opinions over mine, haha)

She is not liking the Altimas. I read bad things about the 3.5 v6, so I have had her looking at the 2.5 engine models. What do you guys think of these? Here are a couple we are going to go look at today, varying price and mileage, but all pretty much the same car I think.

High price, but low mileage.
http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=204939&adid=6008319

Twice the mileage and only a grand cheaper

http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=204939&adid=6310607

Higher mileage still, but the price more reflective of that.

Random Civic they also have.

Thanks guys.

WHERE?

The VQ30/VQ35 has been widely praised for 15 years as one of the best engines on the market.

I know these are Maxima's, but I am assuming it's the same engine.

I didn't read anything out of the ordinary for that site, in regards to engines; maybe one or two actual mechanical engine problems. The VQ has had one major fault over the years, and that is ignition coils, which are a bit pricey, but not obscene compared to other modern engine components.

That's cool, but what do you think about the 2.5S Altimas I linked above?

I have a driven a few Altimas. I thought it was pretty good. A little bit cheaper alternative to Accord / Camry, without sacraficing much. The 2.5L provides enough power. Drives pretty good, I would consider one if I was looking for that type of car.

I had a 2.5 Altima as a rental car. I believe it was an 04 model. I tell you what. Its boring. I couldn't wait to get my cavalier back.

Agreed. The 3.5L V6 is an excellent engine. I would likely choose it over most other midsize sedan V6 engines.

Hrmm... Where were you looking for the info on the engine? The VQ35 is a damned awesome engine (ie, less displacement and no need for a S/C to make 260 HP, better than the GP/GTP).

The 2.5 isn't a bad engine at all either, but it's had some problems from what I've seen. If you plan on leaving it stock, it oughtta be just fine.

As far as it being too small it's probably just personal perception but the Altima SE-R feels larger to me than the Grand Prix.

I am 5"10 195lbs, but the car won't be for me, it is for the GF, and she is a lot smaller then I am.

interesting lol im considerably bigger then you an find i have no issues with room

Re: 05 Altima 2.5 S

I don't think it was just "room", I think was the whole driving experience, when compared to the GTP. I thought the Altima was a pretty nice car, plain, but nice. However, I don't bother to argue with her. I don't like sleeping on the couch.

We'll just have to find another car to look at now. That's all.

Honestly, I won't be surprised one bit if she wants to start looking at SUV's now.

I am still pushing her on a GXP, or Impala SS, saves me buying one and I can keep my Sierra too

Well, we are looking for a 4 door car now, so we test drove a new Saab 9-3...great for 2 people but not if people actually want to sit in the back so that went out the window. Great drive though, I really did like it.

I had previously test drove a new Jetta and Mazda 3...I really liked both of them but Karo wants something bigger and that it will last a minimum of 5 years. So now we are looking at the Acura TSX and Toyota Camry V6...so those are also two very reliable options if you are looking for 4 doors.

As for a SUV, what size and what models? I am starting to get interested in the Honda Pilot myself...I know that we don't have kids or anything but it be nice to be able to take both the dogs with us and not have them in a back seat.

Go for a Murano or Rogue if you're not going to go GM.

Re: 05 Altima 2.5 S

Well, we may have to speed up the search, or call it off all together. Today, while driving into town, something "locked up, ground really loud, then let go" in the GTP, now there is a loud clunk going over every bump. So depending on what that is, we may just say to hell with the grand prix and get get something else, or if we decide to put any more money into it, we may as well fix the few other little things that are wrong with it too, and keep on drivin' it.

What to do, what to do. Have to wait for the diagnosis from the mechanic first.

Gutty, just as an info-tool, I'd use the Black-book website to see what Trade-in values are supposed to be (Ideally), 17,000 seems rather high for the 2.5S.
