As of today my girlfriends 99 Kia Sportage wont start. ( I did tell her not to get it because they're junk, but she didn't listen so no flames please, lol) Tried jumping it, but that didn't work. It does make a clicking noise once when the key is turned, and it does it only once no matter how long it is kept in that position. The Lights work fine, besides when the key is turned, then they dim and stay dim untill the key is turned back then they light right back up. I hooked up my code reader to it but no results. I am thinking it is the starter, but the engine compartment is so cluttered with junk that it's hard to tell where anything is. Also I was looking at it in a parking lot at about midnight when I left work. Anyhow, can anyone confirm this? Or at least point me in the right direction? I did try searching, but didn't come up with much help. Thanks!!
battery is probably dead.
too dead to jump start
get that tested first b4 you spend money on a starter

X2
Jump it first and see if it starts. If it does, drive it to advanced auto and get both the alternator and battery tested. Hell its free might as well get it done.
Iv had that happen before. If its clicking, my last thought is starter...

Too dead to jump? I've seen batteries be to dead to charge, but never to dead to jump.
Hell, as long as the jumper cables are hooked to the two cables in the Kia and the cables draw the juice from the other vehicle, it should start. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't anyway.

I have had it happen to a friend of mine.
There was enough volts but not enough amps or visa versa.
We had to change out the battery between to vehicles and low and behold it turned over like a champ.

if it's the starter, it'll be on the back of the motor off the bell housing on the transmission. If i remember correctly, it's on the passenger side.
(my gf has a 99 sportage as well and we've replaced the starter in addition to numerous other things)
if it's just clicking though, it's most likely a dead battery.
Yeah, it turned out to be a defective battery... Didn't consider that because it was just put in around March, also the lights worked, and it wouldn't jump. Got a new one though as it was still under warranty so it turned out good. Thanks for the help, that probably would have been one of the last things I checked lol.
